Vista shuts down abruptly

Hello people

I´m looking for some opinions about this issue I´m getting. Recently I got as a present a vista ultimate desktop which previously hadn´t given any troubles to it´s owner.

The specs are the following:

AMD athlon 64 X2 dual core 5000 + 2.60 ghz
NVIDIA GeForce 6150S nForce 430

So I brought the pc home and started using it without a problem, but after one day the computer starts shutting down on me. No error screens, nothing, it just shuts down. It doesnt restart or anything, all of the sudden it goes blank. I can turn it on again, it boots and I can use it for a while and again it shuts down. I have left it on all night and it didnt turn off, but it seems to happen when I am using it. There´s no pattern here, it might happen at any moment, without any logical trigger.

I opened the tower to check the fans and they are both working well. I downloaded a soft called everest to monitor fan and cpu temps, and both the motherboard and processors remain usually between 50 and 60 degrees celsius and the fan remains around 2800 rpm.

I have no idea whats going on and can´t seem to find any conclusive solution on the net or asking friends. I am certain this didn´t happen before I brought the computer home, but I also did a system restore to a date previous to when I brought it to make sure it is not software related and the problem persist. The computer didn´t suffer any hit or impact on the way here.

I am at loss, the pc works flawlessly and I am thrilled to use it, but as long as this problem persist I have to continue using my old crappy laptop.

Any help would be inmensely appreciatted.

What new programs or hardware have you added since you got it?

Well not much really, but anyways I would discard that since I made a system restore to a date before I started meddling with it and still the problem persists.

Hello manu84,
There are several things that could be causing this.

Check the temps, 50C/60C is high for a desktop on idle, are they spiking ?.

Check the PSU, this is another component that can give the symptoms you are describing.

Check all cables, both power and data, especially the HDD.

Bottom line is that it could be any number of things, you just have to keep up the diagnostics and you will get there.

Does your computer completely power off, or does it continue to run with a "blank" screen?

Thanks guys I will keep diagnosing.

One thing that I might add is that there are higher chances of this happening while Im attempting to view flash video online or do a videochat, so it does seem related to cpu activity.

Try getting it to shut down while keeping an eye on the temps with SpeedFan.

Download SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer

This will eliminate the temp side of things.

Hmmm well speedfan shows hd0 and core to be around 40º but then temp 2 and 3 appear with a fire sign and they are around 60, 65º. Thats quite high isn´t it?


whoa temp3 has climbed to 80º and core up to 50s and now has a flame symbol. Hasnt shut off yet but must be near. Cpu usage is between 10 and 20 %.

This is looking like a definite temp issue isnt it?

Can you post a screen shot of the temps at their highest, use the Vista snipping tool.
