Actually I believe it drops with every failure/crash (i.e. application, hardware, windows, & misc.) it drops and then gradually goes up with time if you have no other errors.

Hi acdcfan,

The category 'Software (Un)Installs' does not affect your reliability index - it is included for reference. The other '... Failures' categories DO affect the index. It is normal for the graph to fluctuate over a period of time as applications can fail (although in some cases this is due to the system being impatient and not giving the application time to complete what it is doing). Generally speaking, the closer your index is to '10' the more reliable is your system. The first category is included so that you can see if (un)installing an application makes a difference to your score. If you run an application and it always fails, that would bring your score down. It would also indicate that you probably need a patch for that application. The time to worry is when you start getting other failures, especially 'Hardware Failures'.

got a score of around 3. Software errors occur when i play an online game (RO) and vista always says that my AVG Anti Virus has stopped working even though its fine. Maybe I should just get rid of AVG lol.

So yea...

All them crashes is basically just hl2.exe. Everytime I close Counter Strike Source, it stops working. It only happens with this hl2.exe based game. Half Life 2 doesn't do it, or anything else, just CSS, so it must be one of the parameters I have in my .cfg, just I can't be bothered going through it all.

If you have typically had errors in the past, and now have a relatively stable system, you can easily 'reset' the scores - although this is not technically what you *should* do.

However,r for those interested, details below.

Some background - I have been running Vista x64 for a little over 2 months - and have been trying out programs left and right, as well as OCing my system, testing stability, etc. This has led to overall low reliability scores for me, so now that I Have reinstalled and fixed the 2 remaining issues I had with my OC and stability, I wanted a quick and easy way to 'start from scratch' without having to reinstall my OS again.

I search the Internet and found a post by a MVP that detailed how to go about resetting the Reliability index. I'll quote it here for ease.

This can be accomplished, but it is not really recommended. One of the
biggest problems when troubleshooting system problems is determining what
happened and what caused it to happen. Reliability Monitor gives you a day
to day analysis of application and driver installations, records failures in
applications, hardware, and the operating system. Reliability Monitor will
be valuable when troubleshooting problems because it allows you to quickly
see changes even if the user is not aware of them.

The Reliability Analysis Component (RAC) calculates a stability index over a
period of time and tracks changes that are likely to affect stability. It
displays this information in the Stability Chart. This chart contains
information that goes back to the time when Vista was last installed.

If you still want to reset this important information, open Windows Explorer
and navigate to the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\RAC
Folder. There are 2 sub-folders named Published Data and State Data. Copy
these 2 sub-folders somewhere safe and then delete the contents of the 2
folders.

The Reliability Monitor will show as empty until it has checked the system
which happens every 24 hours.

If you decide that you want the information back, just copy the 2 folders
you saved back to their original locations.

Have no clue if I have it correct. Vista really has been rock solid after my fight with the video card. I just connected my sat dish to wintv 1600 and it appears it work fine still playing with that. But remember all I use on capture card is capture it stays on one channel. All the errors have to do with installs of updates and improper shut downs. If there were no updates it would be a straight line. Thanks for all the help
