I have just tested the Chip update packs. I abandoned that as it appears to get stuck on searching for update ids.

In the top pane click the os you want to work on to highlight it in blue.



If it is not the currently running os, click "open session"





Best not to integrate too many at a time. About 30, then boot into vista ( or reboot if you are doing this from within vista), then the next 30 etc.

Thanks for providing instructions for using the Dism++ tool to install missing updates.

Just a quick note that I'm currently having problems downloading the Dism++10.1.1002.1.zip file from the link you provided if I use the Firefox v94 or MS Edge v96 browsers on my Win 10 machine, but that might have something to do with my browser privacy settings or a content blocker extension (e.g., by Malwarebytes Browser Guard due to light traffic on this GitHub webpage). I have no problem if I download from the Chuyu-Team/Dism-Multi-Language repository on GitHub at GitHub - Chuyu-Team/Dism-Multi-language: Dism++ Multi-language Support & BUG Report (i.e., if I go to Release Dism++ 10.1.1002.1 · Chuyu-Team/Dism-Multi-language and then click on the Dism++10.1.1002.1.zip link under "Assets") using those same browsers.

Yes, there is an x86 executable included. I havent tried that yet.

The way I do it.

1. Install vista to a spare partition

2. At the first oobe screen ( pic below) do not enter anything. Instead press ctrl+shift+F3


It reboots into audit mode. and you can see the sysprep window



3. You can then install updates, drivers, whatever you want.
You can reboot as often as you like, just select audit mode in the dropdown


can also turn off annoyances in startup



4. When you are sure you have done everything, you can clean it with dism++




5. Then select oobe and tick generalize in the sysprep window. It will do the generalizing for a few seconds.




6. Reboot into another os ( or winpe) and capture the vista partition into install.wim

However every update failed. I tried it again but this time I downloaded the service pack 1 first and it appeared to download.

Your 20-Oct-2021 post # 103 in Brink's thread Why SP1 may not be available for you and how to get it said you had already reinstalled Vista and were looking for self-extracting installers for SP1 and SP2. Instead of starting from scratch and reinstalling Vista again using a slipstreamed ISO that includes SP1 and SP2, it might be simpler for you to download SP2 using the download link I provided in post # 104 of Brink's thread and just install SP2 manually (assuming Dism++ was able to install the prerequisite SP1). Then you can use Dism++ to install the remaining ~ 200 security updates (in small batches of ~30 updates at a time followed by a re-boot as SIW2 suggested <above>) that were released between SP2 (May 2009) and the end of extended support on 11-Apr-2017.

Hello SWI2. Thanks for the info. I followed your instructions about using the Dism++. Just got a few questions. First here is what I did:

1.) Downloaded

2.) I scan for the files and I used Windows Vista Premium 86
The following updates were not checked:
Original updates (28)
Feature Packs (5)
Update Rollups (1)
3.) I installed all the Critical Updates and Security Updates in groups of 25-30. As these wee the ones with check marks
After I installed the updates I received Request Restart. Some Downloads Failed
4.) I restarted my PC. Upon restart I did notice Service Pack 2 was installed, so I did make some progress

So here is my question. I went back in and scan the updates again thinking I would not see as many cause I thought the updates and been installed, but to my surprise I saw a lot of updates to be installed again. Some were checked some were not. Same scenerio as before. Question:
Is this normal?
Did I not choose the correct set of updates?
Did I not follow the correct procedure?

At least I got Service Pack 2 installed.

I was able to get Service Pack 2 installed. I followed the instructions to install the updates but I not quiet sure I did it correctly. I posted my information in the thread

Both those download links to the Vista service packs on the Microsoft Update Catalog work correctly for me. What I see when I click the Service Pack 2 (KB948465) link, for example:



It doesn't matter now as long as you eventually managed to get Service Pack 2 installed using Dism++, but if those Microsoft Update Catalog links aren't working correctly for you this might indicate there's an issue with your current browser. That's another problem for another day (and another thread so this one doesn't go too far off topic), but you might want to read my 10-Nov-2021 instructions <here> in the BleepingComputer Vista board for installing Firefox ESR v52.9.0 (Mozilla's legacy Firefox browser for Win XP and Vista) once your Vista SP2 OS is patched back to end of support on 11-Apr-2017.
