Vista installation missed a step

hello all, this is my first post here,

ive installed vista home premium 64 bit in the past and had no problems whatsoever,

but i had to change harddrives and reinstall windows with a clean install but you know near the end of the installation it asks you what network location you want (home, work, public) i never got that this time. and i thought windows didnt install correctly so reinstalled windows again(yes i installed windows twice on a brand new hard drive.....)

but even the second time i installed windows i still didnt get that network selection screen. ive got it in the past but this time i do not get that option and vista automatically set it to publick network when i was in windows.

everything for me was the same as this tutorial below, but the only screen i did not get was the Step Two, picture #7.

Some set-ups do differ, so it is nothing to worry about.

Hello Wutsup, and welcome to Vista Forums.

This happens if Vista doesn't detect your network during setup. Vista may not detect it due to either you are not connected to a network or internet, you may need to install your network adapter drivers after installation before seeing it, or setup a network (ex: wireless network) after installation before seeing it.

As WhizzKid said though, this is normal and nothing to worry about.

ok, but i have a few more questions

1. i have not changed my network set up at home, how come last time i reinstalled windows it asked me for the network location then? could it be that it didnt ask me this time because my other computer was off during the installation? so it didnt detect a network?

2. since it didnt detect a network during install, the network setting was set to public network automatically when i first got into windows. is this normal?

3.well yea when you first isntall windows you will have no internet connection cause you have to install the network drivers. so are you saying that the network location selection screen shouldve came up after i installed my network driver?

It varies with each setup, but sometimes Vista will recognize your network adapter with the default driver from Vista during setup. In this case, if you have say a internet connection or network, Vista may see it and ask you what type of network location type it is during installation. If not, then usually Vista will ask you when it does see it like after you install your network adapter drivers or while setting up your network.

You can always change the network location type for your network connection at any time though.

yea i already know that. but even after installing my network driver, i didnt get the network selection screen. it was already set to public network by itself.

Sorry, I thought that I did.

Your Vista installation is fine. I'm not sure why it selected Public for you automatically, but you can change the network type from Public to Home if you like. It may have not selected Home since the other computer was off, but you'll have to test that to see whenever you reinstall next.

Without meaning to butt in, I have seen this happen before. I have had to re-install various computers around our house, and quite regularly I don't get offered this option for some reason. My Dad's computer always gives me the option, but my computer did the first time, but not the last twice. I have not re-installed my brothers computer enough times to call judgement on that one. I have no idea why they do this sometimes, but I can confirm that no further problems have arisen from this

Yes it did, and I had to manually set it to Private.

3: That is probably quite likely the reason behind all this! With a network card that does not work under standard Windows driver, you would need to manually install the driver AFTER the installation, and therefore configure it after the installation, as you did not have an active internet connection at the first startup, effectively during the installation, and so there was no network detected to change the settings for. As there was no network to configure, Windows setup did not offer you this option, hence the missing step. However, on the very first install, from the factory, the factory has quite likely already put on the driver, and so the internet works out of the box, and so one gets this option. Does this make sense? Do you think I have got it correct Brink? It would explain why people sometimes get it, and why it oft works out of the box, but not subsequently? Or have I just got it all wrong!?

I thought that these were already answered, but answered inline below. If you needed something more specific, then please specify.

Could be, but you will have to test it with the other computer on to know for sure.

Yes, without a private network detected, Vista will default to public normally.

Anytime you setup a network location, either during installation or while setting up the network after installing the network adapter drivers, it should ask you what "network location type" you want it to be.

Yes, Vista still installed correctly. It just means that you will have to go back and manually setup your network connection instead of you doing it during the installation. That's all.

Brink, so for question #3, youre saying that after i installed my network driver from my motherboard provided cd, and after my computer restarts, it the network location screen should pop up when in windows?? (home, public, work)

cause vista did not ask me after i installed the network driver.

Nope, during when you are setting up your network afterwards is when it will usually pop-up instead.

sorta confused. my home network is already set up. so are you saying that it should pop up after i install my network driver or after i set up my network setup?(i.e. plugging in router, modem etc etc)

cause my network is already set up
