Vista hangs during backup.

I'm wortking on a dell inspiron 1720 laptop. Trying to do a full backup, using any backup sofware, the system will hang at about the 40-50% spot. I tried several different programs, Acronis 2010, Easeus To_Do 2 and some others. All reaxc in the same way. After forcing it to shut down and restart, I will sometimes get a chkdsk but it seems to find nothing.

Also tried running chkdsk manually, same result. Alternately, I ran the machine diagnostics from the bios and still nothing. The owner of the machine has not done backups so the ony one he has is 2 years old.

Any ideas?? I really hate to have to start over.

Whenever there is a chkdsk with or without other problems, the next step is to actually check the HD for potential problems

(Have to check my spelling next time!!) Tis did help some. Turns out the drive is a Toshiba and they do not supply diagnostics. I am using the Seatools one in generic mode, so far nothing found.
