Vista crashes before login

Hey everyone

This is my first post, so bear with me if I miss a thing or two.

A few hours ago, my brother and I were getting ready to play some Age of Mythology. It's a somewhat old game, developed by Microsoft themselves, which only serves to confuse me even more. Anyway, we were about to start when Vista asked me if I would update my Java. Since you have to manually do everything anyway, I say no. As I recall, my screen blinked a few times, got up some weird colours and then came the famous blue dumb screen.

We tried to restart the computer manually, but to no avail. Vista loaded Windows, but before prompting me with a login screen, it dumbed again. We then tried to boot it in safe mode. Everything works fine there, so we tried to reboot normally again. Another dumb. We tried yet again, after removing the disc. Nothing.

Since then we've tried system recovery to set it back a few days, we've tried to let it repair itself, we've tried to unplug everything (everything - mouse, keyboard, sound - everything but the monitor). The monitor, by the way, have some weird lines running down the screen, which notably aren't there when booting in safe mode.

The error code that appears on the dumb is as follows:
STOP: 0x000000050 (0x8F875370,0x00000001,0x8EB5AB0A,0x00000000)

My hardware specs are:
Hewlett-Packard Company m8047.sc
Intel(R) Core2(TM) CPU 6320 @ 1.86GHz 1.87GHz
2.00 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 7500 LE
All the specs can be seen here ( HP Pavilion Media Center m8047.sc Desktop PC Product Specifications - HP Customer Care (United States - English) ). Nothing has been changed since the day of purchase, except my speakers, keyboard and mouse, all of which are plug-and-play.

I really hope some of you have some ideas. I'm few steps away from an actual re-install or upgrade, so any help is much appreciated (even if I've already tried it).

Here are the results of your bugcheck.

STOP 0x00000050: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

Usual causes: Defective hardware, Faulty system service, Antivirus, Device driver, NTFS corruption, BIOS.

Boot into safe mode and open a command prompt.
Type sfc/scannow and press enter, let it scan, if errors are found you may need to do this more than once, until system is clean.

Until this is fixed, un-install your AV software. (don't forget to re-install after).

Defective hardware would most likely be memory, but try the scan first.

Give this a go and post your results, good luck.

Thank you for the advice.

Sadly, it didn't solve anything. It runs the process, it verifies at a 100% completion and says that Windows haven't been able to find any integrity errors (I'm translating to the best of my abilities, but not sure of the terminology).

If you have two sticks of ram, remove one and try, if all goes well, remove that one and try the other one. This will eliminate the ram one way or the other.

If the ram is good, then the next thing to try is the drivers, try the ram first, and if that is all good, we can take a look at the drivers.

Okay, I'll try that. But I'll admit that I'm not to comfortable about messing around inside my computer. If my brother is, then we might take a look at it today or tomorrow, but if not, then it could be as long as until the weekend. But I'll let you know what happens when we try it.

Had I said yes, it would download the update, and then do nothing until I install it. Since I'd forget to install it, it would do the same thing the next time I used my computer. So I thought "to hell with it" and decided not to let it update.

If you do not install updates you will have problems.

You could also try running the HP Diagnostic tools and see if they come up with anything.

Sorry for intruding, but how do you figure that out without looking at the crash log?

Sorry for intruding, but how do you figure that out without looking at the crash log?

If i told you, i would have to kill you.

In the first post you will see that the stop code is 0x000000050, this is the code to look for, then check the code against a list of codes and it will tell you what the most likely cause is, or at least point you in the right direction.

Well, that went well *sigh*

I had my uncle out to help me yesterday, but no luck. We tried to jumb the BIOS, we tried the RAM sockets, we tried all he could think off, short of changing the power supply (since he didn't have a spare) and changing the motherboard. Sadly, we're pretty sure that's where the error has occured. On the motherboard.

For now, he's going to see if he has a spare power supply at home that fits, but for now my computer is as dead as can be. Since we're not getting anything on the monitor, we can't see what it is doing, and there's no beeping - with or without external loudspeakers.

I'm thankful for the advice I've gotten, but sadly, it doesn't seem to be helping...
