Ive just tried downloading and installing the standalone SP1 for vista 64, but still the same......downloaded, started to install (went up to 50% straight away) sat there for 15 mins, then completed on green bar, window then disappeared from screen.....no sp1 installed!
Could some of the updates already installed be causing the problem and would it be wise to uninstall all the updates in 'installed updates'?

Try these steps,

1. Click Start – Search for Services.msc and press enter.

2. In the right-pane, scroll down to the “winHTTP Web Proxy Auto Discovery Service“. Right-click and select “stop”. and make startup tye as disabled

3. Now, start sp1 installationand should run without errors this time.

Went into services, winhttp wasn't started. It was set to manual so I changed that to disabled. Ran windows update again with sp1, it failed.
Same thing, green bar went up to 50%, then update window said update failed.
Should I now go back and change the winhttp back to manual and 'start' it?

I might try a repair as suggested, but open to any other ideas!

I only see two solutions:
1.Try repair install http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html
without loosing data and program and all updates will install (see describe in this link)
2.Use System Restore to back any previous checkpoint :(

I am just curious why you suggest doing a system restore? I formatted my hard drive last week before I had this problem. Im not sure where you want me to restore back to.

There has been many occasions when an update has created a restore point but I noticed a few days ago when I went into system restore, there weren't many restore points in there it must delete some after a while?

Very odd thing....Ive just gone into 'computer - properties' and at the bottom it said 3 days left to activate? When I re-installed vista last week, I chose to 'activate now' and yesterday it said at the bottom that windows was activated????

Needless to say, Ive just clicked to 'activate online now' and it said successful. Why would it be activated for almost a week then suddenly request activation?

I thought the activation request might have suddenly made a difference, but unfortunately not, sp1 still not installed!

As said you.You are victim anti-pirate protection as many people with also legal system of course .For checking of system legal is also responsible BIOS -If you don't have the newest version update it.If still no help or you have already the newest BIOS ...

only leave MS Support
Help and Support

for SP2 support is free for a while

I think updating the bios is a little out of my depth. Ive just been reading how to do it and it says its only recommended if you think your system will benefit by it. I will try a vista repair first and if that fails to solve my problem then I may do a complete format again at some point.....if that doesn't sort the problem, than I will have to wait until I can have a new pc!!

Thank you for all your help, I have learnt quite a lot from you.

Thank you Flavius and for all your help. I think I will give up for the time being in trying to install SP1, it seems my pc is just not going to have it!

You are very knowledgable and I envy you!

Hi
Sorry to be a nuisance but Im hoping you might be able to help again.
Im just in the process of doing the upgrade/repair with my vista 64 disk. It has got to the stage of 'Gathering Files' but has been sat at 26% for 45 minutes. The dots at the side of 26% are moving but Im not sure if its stuck and what to do?

I waited over an hour, in the end I cancelled the repair/upgrade, restarted my pc. It seems ok (as in 'as it was before I started to try the repair).

I think its looking like I will have to do a clean install of Vista. But any ideas as to why it 'hung' on 26% would be appreciated and also if you would suggest I try the repair again?

Sorry Flavius, your message came through just as I had cancelled the repair. I know I can be impatient but if it had just moved up 1% more, I would have left it.
Do you think it is worth trying again before I go ahead with the clean install?
