Vista 64 SP1 will not install

Hi
Im hoping someone can give me some advice.....I am running Vista Home Premium 64bit.......
A couple of weeks ago an update (KB955430) would not install. I understand this is a pre-requisite for SP2. Ive had one or two problems lately so decided (reluctantly but nevertheless) to re-formatt, give it a 'clean out'.

Since then, lots of updates have installed, including the KB955430. Now, SP1 will not install. It was not offered but I went on the update website and tried to run it from there but now it shows in my available updates unless I choose to 'hide' it.

Everytime I try to install it goes through the process of preparing, downloading (although it shows the file size as 11.2MB and Im not sure this is as big as it should be) and within a few seconds shows it as 50% installed then goes to the red error window on updates saying installation failed. I have seen a couple of different error codes on the numerous times Ive tried to install it but the latest one is error code: 80070057.

I have also tried downloading the 64bit standalone version. This appears to be installing, gets to approx 50%, then suddenly the green bar goes to the end (all within about 15 minutes) then the installation window disappears altogether with no message, error message or anything (but it hasn't installed).

I have tried lots of different things suggested from various web sites...Ive run chkdsk, Ive checked to see what pre-requisities are for SP1 (938371, 937287,935509) these are all installed. There are also 3 updates installed - Hotfix for Microsoft.NET Framework 3.5 SP1 KB953595, KB958484 and KB963707. These confuse me as I would have thought these would only install if SP1 was installed??

I did wonder if SP1 could be installed and I didn't realise but Ive checked in Programmes list and also computer properties (where it did say Vista Home Premium and Service Pack 1 underneath prior to my re-formatt) and theres no sign of SP1 now.

I also went to the update webpage and downloaded and tried to install SP2 but just to confirm to me, it did say 'SP1 must be installed before I can install SP2'.

I don't know what else to try, any suggestions would be gratefully acknowledged! I have spent hours searching for an answer on the internet, but with no luck.

Try install updates in safe mode,SP2 require SP1 installed

If still nothing help I need all error codes.First if you use any proxy server you have to remove any proxy settings:http://www.vistax64.com/785616-post2.html

Run cmd.exe with administrative previlliges and type

sfc /scannow

when it will done create report

Run cmd.exe with administrative previlliges and type

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

on your desktop appear file sfcdetails.txt

next run CheckSur http://www.vistax64.com/785616-post2.html
even if this tool won't resolve problem automatically it create logs:

C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log

System also create logs -there is log C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log but this log is mostly too big
So download FireGenUL Altair Technologies Ltd.
place this file in C:\Windows\System32 and restart computer
next run cmd.exe and type

firegenul

and then will create short *.htm report from WindowsUpdate.log placed in C:\Users\<your account> -report name FireGenUlReport.htm

All tree files:FiregenUlReport.htm,sfcdetails.txt and CheckSUR.log pack them and attache to post -if they will are to big to attache upload them on Speedy Share - upload your files here
if you will have any problem with creating FireGenUlReport.htm attache WindowsUpdate.log instead

Thank you for you reply. I am just letting you know what has happened so far.

I ran Proxycfg.exe in cmd as administrator, it said 'Proxycfg.exe is not recognised as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

I booted in safe mode and safe mode with network but in either, windows update wouldn't open, just nothing happened when I clicked on windows update. So I browsed to the microsoft website and downloaded the SP1 64 bit standalone file. Clicked on run, this behaved exactly as before, the blue bar on intallation immediately went up to 50%, then after 15 minutes went straight to completed. The installation window then disappeared from my screen and SP1 has not installed.

I rebooted after this, windows update notified me that an update for windows defender was available (KB915597), this installed successfully.

I ran sfc/scannow, first time my pc shutdown and restarted half way through. Second time it completed. I followed instructions (to the letter as I am not familiar with cmd commands). This put a text document (sfcdetails) on my desktop but the notepad was blank?

I am just about to run checksur but wondered what I may have done wrong to not retrieve the sfc file?

Im hoping I have attached the sfc log file with this message.

Just searched and found the windows update log that was created previouslu, again, not sure if you would like me to re run this?
I tried to attach it to this message but don't think it will, as you say, its a large file. I will follow instructions for firegenul.

Yeah, you have right -@Peter Folder was wrong -proxycfg command disappeared in Vista What happened to proxycfg in Vista
instead make this command

netsh winhttp reset

+restart

But because you have also problem with standalone versions I'm not thinks so It was really any issue.Strange CheckSur nothing found :sarc:.Sfc command also not detect any serious problem -these small trouble with C:\Windows\ehome often happen in many computers without consequences.

My Computer

I havent followed your last instructions just yet, Ive been struggling with Firegenul!!
I downloaded this to my documents, extracted to windows/system 32
Restarted
opened command as administrator
This created a report ok but opened a webpage up with the results. I can't find the report on my pc? Maybe Im doing something wrong but Ive copied the webpage link, not sure if you will be able to open this?

You have report in folder C:\Users\<your account> -it shouldn't be big -about 50kB

My Computer

The report is definately not in there? I have even ticked 'show hidden folders' and unticked 'hide protected operating system files' and its still not there. Did the link I sent not work? If not, is there any other place I can look or any way to show you the contents of the webpage?

I have 2 strange folders and an odd text document in C: Local Disk folder that I don't know where they came from:

54aebc1e9000484c93d02f6ca9 (This contains 6 similar folders as the one below and 3 files 'spinstall, spreview and spwizui.dll)

62431f022d42a7c8512781 (This has lots of subfolders in eg. ar-as, bg-bg etc etc and 2 files named 'spclite' and 'spwizui.dll)

This is the content of the notepad:

2009/07/15-20:06:38.380 ComClient LcsGetCurrentStateHid() exception=10061
2009/07/15-20:07:38.380 ComClient LcsGetCurrentStateHid() exception=10061

2009/07/15-20:11:38.380 ComClient LcsGetCurrentStateHid() exception=10061

Are these of any importance and should I delete them?

If these folders are directly on root C: surly comes from any updates -probably from NET Framework hotfixes -if yes remove them completly and again try install hotfixes -this kind of folder also would cause any problems

Strange.Again run firegenul and when report appear in your browser choose File>>Save as any *.htm and attache here

EDIT
I didn't notice before you have already attached ;).I'm reading it now

My Computer

Sorry, but I am still trying to get a copy of the firegenul report, not sure if you are recieving it. I have put it in notepad and hopefully attached it to this message.
The speedy share didn't seem to work, it said 'file invalid' when I tried to upload it.

Also not too much in this log

1.Navigate to folder C:\Windows\WinSxS and find there all *.xml files -remove them all
-to remove these files you have to first take ownership these files :lecture:http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/157304-folder-permissions.html
2.Reinstal Windows update Agent How to obtain the latest version of the Windows Update Agent to help manage updates on a computer

You mean these strange folders? They often appear and sometimes cause problems with updates :sleepy: -remove them also

If still nothing help use system restore http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76256-system-restore-undo.html
to back any previous checkpoint

The only XML document in the winsxs folder is 'cleanup'. Should I delete this?

All the FATAL errors and WARNINGS on the windows update report, are they serious and can I do anything about them?

I have seen similar errors and warnings in the Event Viewer, are these anything to worry about?

I thought when I re-installed Vista everything would be working good, but its not much better.

Another thing that happened this afternoon....while I was generating one of the reports you asked for, a box popped up in the bottom right hand corner of the screen and it was a reminder to activate windows. It was only there for a couple of seconds. Im sure I activated windows while installing and Ive checked 'computer-properties' and it says that windows is activated.

It is very strange error :sarc: neverless I heard it is also possible -It was a bit similar problem on this forum http://www.vistax64.com/windows-updates/232628-cannot-install-vista-sp2-error-0x800f082f.html
Symptoms are similar -it also going on loosing licence during updating system -the post @Earendil Star maybe help you
this means:
1.Check time both in BIOS and in the system
2.Update manually time:
a:click adjust time and date
b:Click the Internet time tab
c:Click change settings make sure the server is time.windows.com
d:click update now
3.Run cmd.exe with administrative previlliges and type

slmgr -rearm

/*I know it sound stupid use this command when system is already registred, but this command is also probably responsible for hidden licence time*/
4.Delete all *.xml files in C:\Windows\WinSxS and all files in C:\Windows\WinSxS\Temp+restart
5.Install updates standalone versions-not from Windows Update

see also:installation failure sp2 (x64)

Good luck

I have checked the time and followed your instructions re internet time tab etc. I have run slmgr -rearm ok.
I cannot delete the cleanup folder in winsxs. It says I need permission so I right clicked the folder to open 'properties, security tab, advanced but the tick in the 'include inheritable permissions' box is greyed out therefore I cannot uncheck it.

My update reminded me to install SP1, but still will not install. I am going to look through the links you sent me, see if theres anything to help me in there too!

Because you are not the owner -the owner is TrustedInstaller-you have to take ownership -in advanced option is tab "owner" -click it and change owner -when you or Administrators group will be owner than you can give yourself full control to object and can remove them
