Very Slow Boot Up

Hi
I have just booted up my computer and it seemed to take ages so I ran a program which calculated how long it took and the results was 643 seconds. This is the first time this has happened since it has previously only taken under a minute.
I haven't installed any new programs recently so any suggestions would be grateful.

You may want to look at start up programs, and all services that start at boot , see if you can minimize some or delay start others, check Brink's Tutorials.

I looked at the start up programs and services and turned off the unnecessary ones but my computer still takes ages to boot up.
It is something which has only recently happened so I don't think its anything to do with the programs installed.

Hello,
I had the same issues and found a nasty little item(consent.exe) showing up in my diagnostics as slowing my computer, little bugger hides itself on task mgr, when you hit show all users. This item can not be found anywhere except that I run Norton and it shows up as program accessing internet, blocked it there, cleaned up some more messiness and now computer seems to move a little faster.

I have already used the tutorial to find out my boot up time because that is how I got the time 643 seconds which seems excessive since it hasn't took that long in the past.
I have also already checked how to increase the boot up time but that has only increased the time by about 10 seconds.

Hi sooty, this is my reboot time wth vista ultimate x64 sp1

Its about 5 or 10 seconds slower now iv installed service pack 2. But to speed up your time run a full virus and spyware scan and then click the link in my signature and start at step 2.

I checked out your link and I followed all of the instructions. It hasn't made much difference because my computer still takes about 10 minutes to boot up.
Like I said previously it has only recently happened so I don't think it is anything to do with the programs or services.
I have also run about 5 anti virus programs to no avail.
Any more ideas?

mmmm.. try anti-malware.. google malwarebytes anti-malware... and then try running windows defender along with it too... I used this to speed up my laptop when it was slowing down:

1.Malwarebytes Anti-Malware(Full Scan)
2. Windows Defender(Full Scan)
3. Avira AntiVir (Full Scan)

= Delete all things they report as being bad files... = Speed :D

And run Ad-aware to get rid of the data miner cookies, which connect with advertiser servers and can slow down your computer booting up. Data miner cookies try to connect to the advertiser server while our computer boots. Ten minute boot times is about right for around 100-200 of these things. One of my sisters have over 300 of them on her computer last month.

Basically its where all that junk mail comes from. A data miner cookie, say for a major department store when you visit their web site, gets placed on your computer. The advertiser server sees a jump in the number of people visiting that department store's web site. Mostly no personal info is gathered. An order to the nearest junk mail printer, then the weekly coupons in the newspaper now include one for that major department store.

If you've run 5 full scans with different anti-virus apps and done every step in my guide from step 2 onwards and its still taking 10 minutes to boot up then there is something seriously wrong.

You should run a System File Checker scan as its sounds like your vista has got corrupted.

JimJoe - I tried running Ad-Aware but that only picked up 7 problems, which I deleted but that didn't make it boot up any quicker.

Stew - I ran "sfc /verifyonly" first and that said "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations". I then ran "sfc /scannow" and that said "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them". I followed the link to the CBS.Log but I didn't understand any of it since it was so long.
Does this mean there is something wrong with the start up files?
Do you think I should run windows from the disk and run it via the repair function?

The results mean that files on your pc are damaged and are most likely the cause of your long boot ups.

In the CBS.log use Find to check for cannot repair and Find Next to find the other files that cant be repaired. Write down the names of those files. Then go to Repair Vista Options and follow the steps to fix your pc.

You may have to access the System Files on Your Vista Install DVD to copy good files to your OS to replace the corrupt files. If you have to then use this link for doing that:

I just ran "sfc /verifyonly" and "sfc /scannow" again to make sure I was correct. this time they both came up saying that they didn't find any integrity violations. I ran vista via the disk and choose the repair function to see if that would help. It said that there wasn't any problems so I restarted the computer. Now when I boot the computer up it shows me a list of services which are being loaded on a black background, but it still takes a long time to start up.
