Unable to copy, paste, move, drag and drop or delete

I have been working with Vista Ultimate x64 edition for almost six months now. After a recent update from Microsoft my computer would not boot. I was able to run the system restore from the Vista install CD and select a restore point from a few weeks ago and got the computer back up and running. My problem now is that I find that when I try to copy and paste nothing happens. Also I find that right clicking on a file or folder and selecting delete also does nothing. I have tried dragging the folder onto the recycle bin with the same results. Nothing. I first thought that it was a permission problem, but checking that shows that I am the owner. I think it maybe registry problem. What is weird is that I have rocketdock installed and I am able to drag and drop the file onto the recycle bin on rocket dock and opening the recycle bin shows the newly deleted file. That is why I believe it is not a permission problem. Anyone have any ideas what would be wrong?
Thanks, Shawn

hey nuwk3r...
I guess one of the links of RichFrogg , refers to Virtual PC case, which is not your case I think.

A) Try running the .reg file I have attached...

or

B)
You could try this:

1. Create a new user account.
2. Log off from your account and Log on into the new user account.
3. Try the copy-paste thing in the new user account.
4. If this case works, transfer all your files, documents, pictures, music etc to the new user account and start using this new user account as your default one.
5. After all transfers are complete, delete your old account.
6. Let us know if it did any good.

Limneos

Thanks for the help.
I created a new account but I still get the same results. What does the reg file attempt to do?

adds a registry value in CurrentControlSet which handles this behavior you're looking for. You can edit it, read its contents and make sure it's safe to run, before you run it.

I am running the 64 bit edition. I think that one is for the 32 bit editions of Vista. I found the FD64 reg patch file and applied it and rebooted but I still got the same results. Not sure what else to try other then backing everything up that I can and doing a complete reinstall. Uggghhhh!

Just curious as I have not tried yet, but does the install disc have a feature like Windows XP had to repair a windows installation? I don't mean the recovery console.

Have you tried selecting an even earlier restore point?

If you think you can help - post, it's a lot better for two members to suggest the same thing than for both to hold back and not help:D

hope that it solves the issue

Do you remember the update that messed you up? Check if it was again installed automatically since last system restore. (That's why I am not on automatic updates...I prefer being notified first before download/installation).

Unstall the update.

I am not sure what update it was that messed everything up. I have tried unsuccessfully to restore back to an earlier date. I also tried to setup a new account using Windows Easy Transfer thinking this would copy all of my files to a new account with new registry settings but the copy and paste and etc problem remained. I am going to try the sfc now and I will post back with the results.

Thanks to all who are trying to help. You are much appreciated!!!

OK. I ran the SFC/Scannow and it completes with corrupted files found. I examined the CBS log file and see about 44 files that are missing. How do I fix this?
Thanks again for the help!

Depends upon the files - can you post just the erroneous indications (using a codebox tag)? Based on those we can tell you the best approach....
