The "New Folder" button no longer works

I have Vista Home Premium.

When I use "Save As" in any application (for example, Wordpad), the "New Folder" button no longer works. Same fault when I download from the internet.

I need to first create the folder using Windows Explorer.

When I try to remember what I might have done recently to cause that fault, it's possible that I made some mistake when using Brink's excellent tutorial to speed up Vista:

If this is a recent problem, you might try a system restore to a point before it started. Info here if needed. http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76905-system-restore-how.html

If you use a restore point before the Speed up tutorial was followed, it will undo some of those tweaks. Redo them one at a time to try and find which one might have caused the problem.

The problem occurred on or after 1 May. I know this, because that is the date of the last "successful" download.

By "successful", I mean that I was not forced to use Windows Explorer to create a new folder for the downloaded file.

I tried System Restore for 1 May, 28 April, 26 April, 24 April, and 22 April.

In all cases, Windows reported that System Restore was unable to restore my system

This is not unusual. My success rate with System Restore (including with WinXP) is probably only about 20%.

I have complete Genie system backups. But these take a couple of hours, so I will continue hacking. It's no big deal

I tried your registry hack. No luck

BTW: My case is not one of the three examples that are at the top of your tutorial. All these three examples are referring to standalone Windows functionality.

In my case, I'm referring to the option that appears in the "Save File" dialog used by third-party applications, such as SnagIT, Mozilla Download, and so on.

There are two options side-by-side. Mouseover on the leftmost option shows "Up One Level", and on the righmost option shows "Create New Folder".

hey Brink when i have multiple restore points 99.9% of the time the 2nd one always works the best lol..i guess were good like that ..just me ranting today

Here's an update.

I just found out that if the "Create New Folder" button does not work, I can right-click in an empty space in the dialog box. The pop-up menu has the option "New", which allows me to create a new folder "on the fly".

This workaround means that I don't need to jump out to Windows Explorer to create a new folder

But I would still be grateful if someone can find the solution

I'm happy to hear that you found a workaround. I just wish I knew of a solution that did not involve reinstalling or restoring your backups.
