"tech support or magicians"

This is one question which is bothering me for a long time. Why do people who call in tech support have a feeling that the tech support over the phone is a magician & they would wave a magic wand & the issue is resolved.

Why does this happen ?

But 95% of the time we do wave our magic wand then ask them to reboot and vola the problem is fixed ;)

Tbh most computer problems ARE caused by the users...

Also I've found that the sort of people that tend to call 'tech help' are the type of people you wouldn't want to have a conversation with in a bar, even for 1 minute.

They tend to be out-of-touch morons without a clue

Oh yes, I always found the worst ones were the wannabe tech geeks, I always ensured I could blame any problem at all on them guys.

When I worked at a university, the Nursing department always asked if something was possible or would work if they did certain things. Asked before breaking it, we got along fine.

The biggest pains I had with computer problems were the MBAs, the people who took a 3 hour 'learn how to use your computer' course given by the local high school after hours, and the Computer Science faculty.

Computer science faculty ? Yup. They would try out computer programs they got on floppy, then turn off their computers and go to lunch. When they came back their desktop PCs wouldn't boot. They tried to claim we had altered their machines, but we worked 1 PM to 10 PM. Finally the campus Dean had to order them to stop using the computer magazine disks. Then their computer problems fell way down in quantity. And those faculty were the worst when it came to back ups.

i guess you are right joan if a tech dont know what they are talking about they relly dont deserve the job. its like a teacher teaching at school without even any knowledge of that particular subject.
