System Restore problem - need assistance

Hi all
This is a very 1st post

I really need help with my system restore problem
Recently, i've modified a little bit of my registry key
In the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Policies \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ SystemRestore
i've deleted two keys which is DisableConfig and DisableSR
which i known that i deleted it because it says that can solve the
system restore creation that disable by group policy
after i deleted it, i can create system restore manually which i can't previously
The problem is, after i deleted the value, the system restore points manually deleted too
whenever i reboot the system, now my pc don't have any system restore point at all
I've recreated the DisableConfig and DisableSR value, but it didn't works
Any help would be highly appreciated..

Are you sure no other file was accidentally deleted with them? I would try and recover the files with Recuva and see what is there. Recuva - Undelete, Unerase, File and Disk Recovery - Free Download.

• How long does it take to create a Backup?

• How long does it take to restore most of a system from a Backup?

• How long does it take to Reinstall everything?

Now, which path would you honestly want to tread?

Are you sure no other file was accidentally deleted with them? I would try and recover the files with Recuva and see what is there. Recuva - Undelete, Unerase, File and Disk Recovery - Free Download.

Can i recover the file with File recovery software?
i thought that is for files like movie, image, etc only
Can it recover registry file?
Btw, can u guide me on how to recreate the DisableConfig and Disable SR file?
Coz i'm afraid i might create a wrong value...

I think backup a registry probably takes little time only, just to export the file right?
If i'm not wrong, just merge the .reg file then the restore is done?
I forgot to save the backup, now mistakes were made, just need to find a way
to make my system restore works again, otherwise would be very risky
Please Help ....

A file is a file, Recuva doesn't care. With Recuva, the longer you wait, the less chance you have for it to be effective. At this point you have nothing to lose. That is why I suggested it in the first place. Is it possible to recover the deleted files with Recuva and re-insert them for the fix? ABSOLUTELY! In regards to doing a partial backup from a disk, good luck with that. When it is all said and done you will have ended up doing a complete restore. As for using imaging or disks for backing up files, Imaging is a better choice for the following reason. When using disks the least little speck of dirt on the disk can create missing bytes of files. Multiply that over lets say 7-10 disks equals heartache. Backing up the registry only takes a little time. You can use the software on your machine or third party software. Anytime your doing any kind of editing in the registry you first back it up. Also anytime you use malware removal software you should backup the registry. Most Malware removal software has a quarantine option for safety.

Imaging is your safest way to recover the system from a disaster. What it does is make a complete copy of your system to an external disk, another internal disk or even another internal partition that on the same disk (the least desirable because if the disk dies, the image dies too).

You can even write an Image to DVDs, but you need a few, depending on the size of the image. A brand new Windows7 installation with no user data may fit on 2 DVDs. But a full blown system with a lot of user data may need many DVDs. The DVDs are a good options for the initial installation image (after you have done all the updates and made your system settings - maybe even installed a few of your own basic programs). DVDs are safe and can be stowed away. For continuous imaging (I make an image every few days), an external disk is the best.

The first thing you do is burn the recovery CD. Now that is not the image but the recovery program that you load from the CD reader in case you want to recover from an image. In a situation like you have now, you would do that and you could recover your system from the last good configuration image in 20 to 30 minutes.

Read the tutorial in my link that I posted earlier and you will see that it is very easy.

Imaging or backing up to a external hard drive by is far the safest. If you use CD's, or DVD,s use quality, it does matter in the assurance of validated data copy. Make sure there are no fingerprints or other abnormalities with the disks you use. Imaging all your drives to a external HDD makes doing a complete clean install much faster and easier. I'm sorry Zero Two we got off topic of your original post. Have you tried to recover the original deleted files? I personally would not insert re-coded files I would do a clean install.

There is another way you can access system restore (even though it is quite a longer destination) :- Go to Control Panel and then click System and Maintenance. After that click Backup and Restore Center. There will be a link near the end -
'Use System Restore to fix problems and undo changes to Windows.'. Click the link and System Restore will come up. Unfortunately, i do not know how to make the System Restore come back onto the Accessories menu. But still, this should help!

Ok, so i just need to recover the files then, when i have recover it, i will report to u
Then how about the DisableSR and DisableConfig value that i've created?
i just delete it and replace with the original one?

Ow, i get it now
So imaging just same with backup but is a better way
So, if i do imaging on the Vista platform, can i restore it to other platform?
E.g. if i want to install Windows 7, can i use imaging on vista n restore it at 7 so all
my data, settings and programs appear the same?

i also want to know more about imaging, can u teach me more about imaging?
such as
-can i do imaging at OS drive? so if there's any error i just restore it?
-how about if i imaging a drive with Vista OS, can i format the harddrive
n do a Windows 7 clean installation to the harddrive, can i use the vista imaging
to restore to the Windows 7 drive, so all the things like programs, settings, file same as before?
Yeah, i'll use the recovery software n try to recover it

Mine just can't save the restore point, the restore point will disappear
every time i reboot the system...

Yes, Recover those files and any other file that you deleted. It should not be that difficult to tell since you deleted them all at the same time. As for imaging I think it would be better for you to follow whs post #10.

If you take an image of Vista, you can only restore Vista. If you want to restore a Win7 system, you have to image Win7. Your Vista settings will only be maintained if you make a Win7 over Vista upgrade. But that is generally not recommended because you might "upgrade" all your Vista problems too. A clean Win7 installation is preferred.
What you can do, however, with your Vista images in Win7 is retrieve the data from the Vista image - provided that was imaged too and did not reside in a seperate partition. You can open the Vista image in Win7 on e.g. your external drive and retrieve the files.
