Try this,

Running System Restore from the command line is often the only way to get a system back up and running. I’ll describe it from the initial boot.
1. Restart your system
2. When the system first boots, type F8 to bring up the boot menu
3. Select the Safe Mode with Command Prompt option
4. Log-on as administrator if needed
5. At your command prompt type %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
6. Hit Enter
7. This will open the system restore wizard…

Pick a date before your problem started.

This will restore your system to how it was before the problem.

It will not boot from cd. I changed boot order to CD and it wont run it at all.

If this is a home made cd you might have to redo it. Remember to burn it at a slower speed, the quality is better.

I hope this helps,

What was about your recovery cd? you didnt answer me

Do you have access to a Vista install dvd? this could also be used to repair your system or if it is an OEM version you could use it to reinstall Vista with your key (under your lappy)

Ok, I tried my recovery disk again, it boots it up vie CD rom but then swings to the blank blue screen then page fault, blue screen. Anyhow, I bought a hard drive for this computer (not knowing about recovery disk) and started the recovery disk, thinking I could do it like the other old lap top I had. Well, the lappy booted up the disk and ran till it found no Vista, LOL. So, what Im saying is the recovery disk does work and boots. Could this give a clue to what the matter with my Lappy?

It would seem to point to a problem with the original HDD I would suggest contacting the dealer and letting them put it right

Wow, didn't want to hear that. Warranty is expired. Only had 1 yr on it. I don't think they'll help me now.....

Since I have a hard drive (new) can I easily install a Windows Vista Premium 32 bit full install with SPon my repalcement hard drive?
Thanks for all your help and kindness...

Hi Kim,

You could try;
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67612-check-disk-chkdsk.html
If your lappy will stay running long enough :)

You could also try contacting HP and asking if they could send you an install DVD explain to them that your HDD is no longer working, after all you have already paid for Windows.

Since I have a hard drive (new) can I easily install a Windows Vista Premium 32 bit full install with SP1 on my repalcement hard drive?

Yes this will work, it might also be helpfull to visit the manufacturers site beforehand to download all the drivers that you will need. You can burn them to a cd or copy them to an USB stick if you have one, this makes the setting up after an install so much easier.

If it is possible you could also borrow an OEM DVD and use it as I suggested before with your installation key (under the Lappy) with this option you may have to do a telephone activation but the call should be free

Pooch

Ps How to activate by phone just in case ;)

Hey, Pooch, got some questions...

1. If the new HD I bought and installed on this computer booted up to safe mode with Recovery Disk, doesnt that mean that the rest of the computer is ok? The new HD didn't have Vista on it, so it could only go so far. Im looking to rule out other issues before I go buy or borrow a New Vista for nothing.

2.If I borrow a Vista from someone, will phone activating ruin anything for the person who lent it? If I put oem install disk in computer, does the screen go to the area where it would say repair computer, without needing install key? I would like to let the friend know I wouldn't hurt them by doing this.

I would see it, that if you have no problems with the new disk that the old one was the problem yes

If by chance it was the old software, then this will also not be a problem anymore because of the new install.

2.If I borrow a Vista from someone, will phone activating ruin anything for the person who lent it? The DVD's are mass produced and don't belong to a specific computer. It is the key that attaches Vista to a computer and also that decides which version of Vista that you use. (all versions are on one disc) There are seperate discs for 32 or 64 bit.

You have to choose the right version, example Basic, during the install

You will not do anything to your friend as long as you use your own key

When you put the disk in the install wizard will start, it is quite easy to follow and you should have no problems to repair the old (if this works) or install Vista.

Perhaps your friend has experience of installing Vista and can help you. This will be far more help to you than I could ever be.

I wish you luck with this and hope that everything works out for you,

Pooch :)

Ps Only one copy of Vista is allowed per key. If you do a new install you will not be allowed to use the old copy of Vista that is still on the old HDD
