SM Bus Driver?

Hey folks,

Let ,e start off by saying that I don't really know what I'm doing, but I'll be able to follow any instructions you give me.


I don't know if this is enough information for you, or if you even need this at all, but I'm using a custom-built PC with Vista Ultimate x64, and after a couple of days it's telling me that I don't have an SM Bus driver installed. What do I need to download to fix this?

From the properties tab of 'my computer', here's what I'm working with:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+ 2.60 GHz, 4030MB, 64bit

That driver should have come on your motherboard driver disk. Put the disk in your drive and install the Chipset drivers again. Is the motherboard and AMD or nVidia? I had the sort of the same issue.

I had it custom built, but I didn't build it myself. I have no idea. I'll see what I can find out. Thanks!

Edit: if I pop my PC open, will I be able to tell what kind of motherboard I have?

Yes, but you don't have to go that far. Use this free software to find out what motherboard you have. The answer should be on the third tab.

Thanks, that software is incredible, and it works... HOWEVER... I have an even stranger problem which seems to be related to the SM bus issue:

This is the second time this week that I've turned my PC on and it's gotten to the screen where it says Windows and the little loading bar fills up, and then my screen goes black and I can't do anything at all. I tried restarting from that point and it hasn't done anything (except once, I think). The only thing I could do to fix it was reinstall windows (and this seems to only hold me over for a couple of days). This has happened twice to me since Sunday.

Another strange thing that's been happening is that when I change my screen resolution, it doesn't seem to always save what I choose for my new resolution - sometimes if I restart, my resolution is at 800x600 or 1024x768 (I have a 22" monitor and a decent video card, so it should be okay). On top of that, it seems like something keeps happening to my video card driver and my system keeps disabling my card out of nowhere. I have no idea what's going on. Halp!

Good to know the software works. OK, so what chipset is your motherboard? What video card do you have: Nvidia or ATi? You need to go to the USER CP on the forum above and fill out your system specs. It's be easier to help you if we knew this information.

As for your other issues. This could all be related to drivers, etc. Did you get a motherboard driver disk with your system? You said you've had to reinstall Windows twice since Sunday? Did you reinstall the drivers from the disk that came with your motherboard? Lots of questions...

a Biostar N68PA-M2T 1.0, and that driver is updated as well. (downloaded the chipset from the Biostar site)

I updated both of the above after reinstalling Windows both times.

One more thing, once I change all my settings to the way I prefer them and update all my drivers, etc., the PC performs very well - I have NO problem with anything, but it seems like as soon as I shut it down, it all goes down the drain.

OK, so you have an Nvidia chipset motherboard and video card. I'd suggest getting the latest Nvidia drivers from the Nvidia website. Word to the wise, the drivers on motherboard manufacturer's websites are usually several revisions behind. I'd suggest you go directly to the source - in this case, Nvidia - for the latest drivers. The files are usually updated every month or so. BTW, the file link above is for your OS, motherboard and video card.

That's strange. What settings specifically are you speaking of? BIOS or software settings? The system not retaining settings usually means a CMOS battery issue but software settings issues could mean a myriad of things. Have you spoken to the person who built your system to see if he can duplicate your problems or offer a diagnosis? Check with him and see what solutions he offers as well.

Actually, I neglected to mention that I tried the nvidia driver after the first crash... It worked, but only for about a day before it shat the bed again. The guy who built it is at a loss; he has noooo idea. Sorry to be such a pain- this is so frustrating!

OK, do me a favor: can you describe exactly what happens (to the best of your recollection) to your system when you reboot it after it is running fine? What exactly is amiss? Are you experiencing BSODs, reboots, etc. things of that nature. It'll help to narrow down the culprit as quickly as possible. Another thing. Has the SM Bus driver issue been resolved? Or is this one of the symptoms of a reboot after a fresh re-install? This is definitely perplexing.

So basically the SM BUS driver issue is resolved when you install the chipset drivers after doing a re-install of Vista 64, right? This is solved then.

I'll turn my p.c. On and everything will look fine and then when it's booting up and gets to the screen where it says windows and there's a little green progress bar at the bottom, well, the windows logo is gone and the green bar fills up as usuAl... Could be your video card is bad or not. Does your motherboard have on-board video? If so, have you turned it off in the BIOS when you installed your video card? Or are you running it in Hybrid SLI mode (or whatever it's called)? Try this, remove your video card and use the on-board one and see what the results are. Do you still have the blank screen on boot-up?

The guy who built my PC told me I could leave his video card in there if I wanted (don't know why, but whatever)... so I've left it disabled and used mine - the GeForce 9400GT. So, my SM BUS issue supposedly disabled both of them and I have no idea what I'm using right now. Does this help you at all?

It looks like you have Hybrid SLI enabled in your BIOS as both the onboard IGP and the 9400GT appear in your Device Manager and the 9400GT has a yellow exclamation in front of it. Try turning off Hybrid SLI in the BIOS so the card will run with only the 9400GT. Note anything that occurs. Then remove the 9400GT and run the system with only the IGP and note also what occurs. You may/may not have to re-install the Nvidia drivers.

Here's an explanation of the Code 43 message:

Recommended resolution

One of the drivers controlling the device notified the operating system that the device failed in some manner.

If you have already run the Troubleshooting Wizard, you might want to check the hardware documentation for more information about diagnosing the problem.

The SM BUS driver issue should be taken care of once you re-install the motherboard chipset drivers after you solve the video issues. Round and round we go...

We need to troubleshoot one thing at a time and eliminate things that have no bearing on the issue at hand.
