Slow vista startup

I tried everything in here: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/70563-boot-up.html?ltr=B

And I still have a slow startup: 30-40 seconds just on the Windows loading bar.

When I first installed Vista it was not like this.

I tried to figure out what was causing this so I downloaded xperf and did a xbootmgr trace.

Could the red circled things be causing the problem:

Vista automatically defragged 3 days ago.

I take it you did all 9 of these? How was booting before you applied these tweaks? Did you also run Auslogics registry defrag?

I noticed my boot times increased a bit (a few seconds) after KB958644, the security update released 10/23; not by much, but it was still noticeable to me. Perhaps I'm just anal like that?

I would try undoing what you did and see if that makes a difference? Vista, by default, doesn't really take that long to boot and it doesn't really require a whole lot of tweaking.

have you disabled readyboost in services by any chance , it also includes readyboot which caches all yuor startup stuff for faster boot , if you disable it it takes AGES to start

Yeah, I disabled ReadyBoost in my services.

I tried setting the startup type for ReadyBoost to Automatic and restart is still slow.

A full startup still takes 115 seconds. I'm going to set my services to default settings and see what that does...


EDIT: OK I fixed it. It had to be one of the services that I needed! It used to take 115 seconds for a full restart now its 54 seconds.

It's weird that enabling more services at startup gave me a faster boot time.

I took another trace and looky now:

In the previous trace services started a whole 40 seconds later, anyone know why this is?

Are you sure? Because I disabled ready boost and I still get 54 second restarts.

I disabled alot of services myself when i forst got Vista , trimmed it right down , then came across another site offering advice on yet more services you dont need , so i disabled them too , i thought they would be unrelated to boot up time but it seemed they wern't , my boot time doubled , re enabled them and all was fine , seems you had the same problem

54 seconds is good btw im getting 66 and after a reg defrag im getting 64 but i have my mouse software , Riva Tuner (for gpu fan control) wireless software and eset smart security all starting so im assuming thats why it takes a little longer

Hi Firestrider, I am sure you have looked already but brink has written some excellent Tutorials on the problems you described. They will improve your boot speed or at the very least prevent you from switching off something you shouldn't. Well worth the read, a must do, in fact.
