Try the Repair (not reinstall) of the .net framework again and reboot.

If that doesn't work, go to Windows Accessories and right click on Command Prompt. Select "run as administrator".

run SFC /Scannow. Does it find any errors?

I'm not at home this morning so I don't have time to look at the scan results.

Just to be clear, the error message you got is from when you ran the Repair option? I don't understand why it's talking about an uninstall. It shouldn't be trying to uninstall it, at least it's never done that to me when I ran the Repair.

You didn't clearly answer my question- when you click on a .net framework entry in Programs and Features you should get two options- the one I wanted you to run is the Repair option. Is that what you're clicking on which results in the installation (uninstall) problem.

In looking at the log, it appears that the .dll that WMP 11 uses to play mp3 is corrupt or you have other codec packages installed.

I'm not sure how to fix the other errors.

Are you using Vista Sp2? Do you have any problems with Windows updates?

And yes I ended up doing the repair.

There are odd occasions when an update will fail, I read the error msg, fix and it installs.

I have the K-Lite Codec Pack installed.

My disk came with SP1, however going through the updates I cannot find KB936330, I don't know if this is relevant or not as my SP is 2, and all updates are done

There are only a couple of files which we need to fix, now..
MSDTC.LOG and MP3DMOD.DLL

I'll post a fix protocol for them later.
- are you able to access the Repair Environment ('Repair my Computer from the Advanced Boot Menu)?

My Computer

System One

  • Manufacturer/Model
    Acer Aspire 8930G
I've uploaded a file - fryaa.xip- to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive

Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...

Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract

Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)

Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'

Pick that

You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt

At the prompt type

DIR C:\fryaa

hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try

DIR D:\fryaa

or

DIR E:\fryaa

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

XCOPY <drive>:\fryaa <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

(e.g. XCOPY P:\wfire P:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h )

run the command (it should take almost no time) and when the prompt returns, type

EXIT

and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt

then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your response
