Sata/Ide to usb hardrive not recognised

Please help.
I have just bought a Sata/Ide to usb converter, but when I plug my harddrive into the usb port of any computer (vista or xp) it beeps and installs the Drivers and even adds the little safely remove hardware icon down in the system tray. but I can't find the hardrive in my computer or in administrative tools. I have tried an IDE hardrive,a 2.5 inch sata hardrive and a cdrom drive, why is it not working.The Adapter is Brand New, I have only just opened it.:cry::cry::cry:

I got the IDE hardrive going. when i plug in my sata hardrive "My Computer" Freezes every single time and it doesnt show up in device manager at all. Is there a way to see if my hardrive is corrupt, if not , how could i format my hardrive then retrieve all of my data afterwards

Does it show up in Disk Management ? ?

If you format it BEFORE backing up your data will be gone.

Doesnt matter now anyway.As far as i know, my harddrive is toast.:cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry:.I go into the windows xp installation and find that it doesnt detect any hardrives at all.:cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry:.Yet again, i still get the error Ci.dll missing or corrupt, my laptop must know windows is still there anyway.
