Solved Restore Disks BACK TO SP1 won't update

Its been more or less accepted that a repair install be performed if there are SFC errors that cannot be repaired.

Could not do the upgrade repair. All I had access to were retail versions, SP1 and SP2. Neither worked. Next I did a full re-install using the retail SP2. (The COA key activated on the second try) I had the same problems as with the restore, including unsigned drivers that were rejected and Microsoft update not working Then I found this post

I installed the Intel driver and now Updater works, The other MS software installs, the drivers that were previously rejected now all work. ALL IS GOOD WITH THE WORLD! Thanks to all who have posted to this thread. I have certainly learned a lot this last week!

That update is a nightmare. It fails with the error code it is designed to fix. It cannot be installed until that error code is fixed. That error code will not be fixed until that update is installed. A vicious cycle.

I have had to do SO many manual installs of this update to fix the error in the first place, although installing the alternative Intel update is a better option when available.

Indeed. It has never happened to me personally, but I have dealt with it many times on forums, and it is a right pain, requiring an extraction of the update (it sits pre-extracted in a special folder on my Desktop I use it so often!) and some offline replacing of some .dll and .sys files, followed by an extremely complicated procedure to manually install the update through the entirety of the system: remaining files, registry in countless places, manifest and .cat and .mum files, etc. etc., followed by using the System Update Readiness Tool to detect and correct errors and ommisions. Not simple.

You could uninstall that update, all Intel Rapid Storage Technology related items, switch something over to Advanced Format, and post for help. Then you would know how

I can't find a good example off hand. You see, in reality, this procedure is rarely carried out in full (I am not the only person to do this, I think MowGreen does it too...). Just replacing the .dll and .sys file sorts the problem. Change permissions so SFC can't easily change those files back...

I doubt it. I wouldn't go to all that trouble. I have the slipstreamed Vista SP2 disk and would simply do a repair install or at worst a format and complete reinstallation.

The problem is that this is not so much a Windows Update failure, rather an incompatibility problem with Advanced Format Disks. It is therefore quite possible that even a format would not actually fix this error.

The best solution is to remove the problematic disk (usually a large hard drive), disable Advanced Formats, install the update, and then reinstall the hardware. The problem arises if the hard disk you have the problem on is also the one you hae you OS installed on. *sigh*

'tis not a good problem! What Microsoft really need to do is to release a flashing utility. I don't know how hard it is to make, presumably extremely hard.
