I'm no TV expert, but it sounds like your brother needs an optometrist? How can he not see the same cruddy picture you're seeing?
We got our hdtv when LCD's weren't quite mature enough to get an expensive one and plasma screens were still outragiously expensive. We paid about the same amount for a 37" Sony WEGA, but it's a tube, not an LCD, so we don't suffer any of those problems, but I would imagine that bleeding is an issue specific to LCD's; it doesn't matter whether they're tv's or monitors, the panels are the same.
I'd suggest fiddling around with the controls a bit? Learn how to change the aspect ratio, set it for wide and normal screen... learn the ways to watch the different formats best. We just keep ours on widescreen, and that seems to work out perfectly whether we're watching DVDs or cable. If you're not able to clear that up, have them replace it... or better yet get your money back... for $2k you can do much better than LG these days.

btw, about that catapult of yours. I'm ok with you slingin rocks and cows at me... just make sure you don't load it up with spaghetti.
