I am sure this is not new questions but I didn't find a clear question and clear answer.

I have Hp laptop with vista I need to remove vista completely and install xp on that laptop. Laptop didn't came with vista cd and I don't have vista cd.
I am not worried about losing data or my driver will not match or backup. Just want to replace vista with xp. When I put xp cd install option is disabled and if I put cd and restart boot from cd installation starts but stop half way. Just want to know simple steps if I can install xp.

Thank you - Ashok

Just a heads up. Some PCs installed with Vista will not support XP if drivers are not available.

Why would you want to uninstall Vista? If you remove Vista, can't install XP and don't have Vista media, you might be hosed (or running Ubuntu, which is not too bad).

OK. so how can install side by side. when I put xp cd it doesn't let me install? The install link is disabled.
Thanks - Ashok

you need to set up a seperate partition on your hard drive and install XP onto that

if your really set on going back to XP i dont see and issues with compatibility , its normally backwards compatible (there will be XP drivers available , in some cases its not possible going from XP to Vista) However as its a HP laptop it may have custom parts (motherboard especially) meaning if HP dont supply the XP driver for it there wont be one available anywhere else

post up the model number and we can see if its ok to just format XP

whats up with Vista anyway? :geek:

Vista in general is slow; this is old laptop with 512 memory. Looks hard to move to xp. Laptop came with loaded some junk s/w I never use and don’t know which ones I should uninstall. There are two anti virus on it..every time I start laptop feels like clicking 50 times cancel/close windows before even I can do any thing. It has C and D drive but D has vista s/w. There is space in C but need to find out how can create partition don’t know..I don’t have laptop right now with me…to give more details but I can later. Thanks

You should not be running TWO anti-virus programs. That will take a toll in resources (memory and speed). You may want to prevent certain programs from starting up at boot, but be VERY sure about making these changes. You can also add USB drive to help with speed. The very best you can do with Vista and your laptop is see if there is a memory upgrade available. You will have the best results with that. If you have the Vista operating system media, I would repartition to one drive and reinstall the OS. And, of course, add the USB drive and additional memory. You will be much happier :)
