"Remember your Place" in Start Menu?

Anyone know of a hack or free software to "remember your place" in the Start Menu? So many times I go way down the list to get to the app folder, open it, select the item to run... it would be nice if there was a "last accessed folder" button in the Start Menu to put the highlight bar there when clicked.

If you're using the Vista Start Menu, it lets you display a list of the most recently used programs. Isn't this adequate?

No. I don't want the last program but the last folder. If I go into Shark's Codecs to do one thing by launching one shortcut in there, then I want to go into the same folder to launch something different, I still have to navigate all the way back down the chain.

I want to be able to do some command to have the Shark's Codecs folder highlighted since it's the last one I opened. Seems like it shouldn't be rocket science.

edit: in fact even better than a button for the last folder, there should be a stack, last in first out. Click the stack and the last dozen or so folders should be in a flip out menu. Then even if the one you want isn't there, you could click on something close, like if I really want Shark's Codecs but SmallTalk is there, I can click on SmallTalk and I'm almost all the way to what I want.

The way the Start Menu is implemented it's a nightmare to try to do anything with it afa programming... so it's difficult to even implement yourself. Even a custom colored folder you set the installer to make all the modifications, but it won't show unless you log off, then back on!! Now stuff changes color on the user and he thinks you messed his system up. It's way too difficult to customize.

Looks like I'll have to figure it out myself. You would think this would have been solved like a decade ago. Sheesh!!
