And Microsoft has not discontinued support of Vista - I think its got another year and a half.

I have heard that their website no longer supports IE 8 however I have been unable to find that in writing to confirm it. I did find this blog post which might explain it better. Basically though the website developers have decided to stop supporting older browsers due to security issues and because of features introduced in later browsers. They are not the only ones to do that either. Don't forget that Microsoft has basically decided to abandon Vista and provide only minimal support. They don't make money on it any more so they would like to have all of us upgrade.

I don't know whether or not the Microsoft website still supports IE 8 (perhaps an XP die-hard would know the answer); but when I performed a factory restore on my Vista PC more than 6 months ago, Windows Update never offered me IE 8, presumably because it is generally no longer supported. Downloading IE 8 from a third party might have been an option; however boweasel's experience suggests that IE 7 is no longer supported even at the Softonic website, but can at least still be used to download Firefox.

I have only ever used Internet Explorer to download Firefox then never used it again
