FAQ

They have to be the same GPU, but not necessarily the same memory.

Can I mix and match graphics cards with different sizes of memory?
While it is not recommended, NVIDIA does offer this flexibility using Coolbits. When purchasing a second graphics card, you should try to match the memory size so that you are ensured full value and performance from your purchase. For example, if your first card is a GeForce 6600 GT with 128MB of memory, you should purchase a second GeForce 6600 GT with 128MB of memory. However, using Coolbits (value set to 18), you can force both of the cards to use the lower of the two memory sizes and operate together in SLI mode. When dissimilar memory sizes are enabled to work together using Coolbits, the effective memory size for each card becomes the smaller of the two memory sizes. Instructions to enable this feature can be found here.

I know about coolbits, just in general they need to be the same memory value, otherwise use coolbits, though like it will run at the lower memory value.

The times I've used SLI (with 6600's and 7600's) I've always just used both the same brand/type of cards. And getting the same XFX 8800GTS at the end of the month for SLI again.

Ya it's a DFI problem. but it's also a ATI problem as many many people have that board. thats all. When you say it's working fine with your board. do you have a X48. just not DFI?

hm.. I heard it was all x48's. that would be very very bad news. Good thing it's only DFI.

either way that still sucks.

I just noticed you have the 4870x2. how you liking it.?
Will you post some Benchies, maybe Mark06 or Vantage. I'd love to see some real results like yours. The reviews I never like completely. Only if you can of course?

I've only had the card installed for a couple days, and I'd like to run a benchie or two, just been busy. From the little I've read about the problem with DFI boards there's already a bios upgrade to fix it. It certainly wouldn't be the first time some motherboard wouldn't work with some new component at first. I remember when the Intel Core 2 duos had just come out. I built my first computer with an Asus P5W DH Deluxe, and an E-6700. It wouldn't even post because they had shipped a bunch of the motherboards with the wrong bios. Had to go buy a cheap Celeron so I could get it to post and flash the bios.
