i have Q6600 on 2,4Ghz, and i have a watercooling system and my temp is around 30-40.
My friend has exactly the same pc with the stock cooling system and he has around 45-50 running it on daily basis around 8 hours a day.!.

My Computer

here's a screenshot of coretemp. The temps are a bit cooler in this one cuz it was first thing in the morning. I have also lapped my cpu which will help shave a degree or two off. And with my DFI p35 board I set C1E and VDROOP to enabled. VCORE was set using VID Special Add leaving VID Control on Auto. Adjusting VCORE this way allows the voltage to
decrease along with frequency while idle

Here's a screenshot of my setup with C1 feature disabled, so that it is reciveing full voltage at all times.

My Computer

I thought vdroop was always enabled..? either way those are some good temps for having an OC to 3.7 I wish I could get those with my little oc to 3.33GHz.. Meh oh well tho, I don't wanna load my CPU to much. it's not needed cuz these things work well enough as they are.. and my Vcore is set to Auto also.. I upped the FSB Volts a lil bit. but the rest is set to auto.. works ok. I'm finally getting better temps now. I added a better fan, and tightened the screws on the tuniq and now I'm getting a solid idle temp of around 36C thats fine with me, I'm going to be happy with that and leave her be...

My Q6600 not OCd at all is running low 30s using a Tuniq Tower 120 LFB, turned so that the airflow matches the case airflow (on my Socket 478 board I could not do that as the Tuniq only fits one of 2 ways on a 478 - so I aimed it at the PSU >-D )

At any rate, I noticed that there are several different methods used here for OCing, but I still haven't taken the jump - I used the link Gunther gave me, but noticed that though I could use the utility to 'up the Bus' it still never registered as being upped- but when I broke the 325 MHz range it froze the machine, even though CPU-Z, CPUID and everything else I had running at the time said it was still at 2.4 GHz processor speed.

So, I am reading a lot more and hopefully when I have a compendium of info I'll start asking around about OCing.

Gunther, your temps are not that much higher - I don't break 40 unless I am doing processor intensive stuff, and you have a pretty decent OC going, so I think your temps are just fine where they are.

ya I think its a pretty good temp where it's at now, I'm happy with it now..

and I also just noticed you have the 780i Mobo, and I have the 750i. They are pretty similar.. and we both have eVGA. I kno that if you talk to anyone that really kno's what there doing, that some say all OC's are different. and every Mobo, and every CPU works out different. some oc better, some don't. some really struggle.. and some people hit Volt gap's where at one OC speed they can use a certain volt, and at a speed barely above it.. they need a much higher voltage.. some just don't OC as well as others.. and some people say never to use the same settings as others.. as all OC's are different..

But in this case, the average Mild OC, with similar boards is pretty simple.. I could basically explain a really easy, and very easy to check way if you'd like.. all it will take is a few SIMPLE changes in the BIOS, and I'm sure yours is very close to the same as mine.. I kno you only have the Q6600 so your going to have to up the FSB more than me to get the similar results.. but either way it's not to hard..

Our Mobo's are very good for OC'ing, and they have some great features for just that, like Cmos reset buttons onboard and what not. (I've never used mine tho).

let me kno what you think. I could explain really easily. and even show you some Screenshots of what to do. and we can just start off with something small, where all you'd need is to set the voltage to AUTO, and a lil OC would be fine as the board would adjust for you.. we could start with just going to 3.0GHz.. wanna do that.. let me kno what you think. as it's not to hard..

edit* What "utility" did you use to UP the bus. I've not actually completely read the link I gave you.. lol. I've just had some people I trust say thats its a really good guide, if you have me help ya, we wont need any programs to do this, just coretemp or something to check temps.. and CPU-Z, you already have those. so all we need is me to explain and you go make the changes in the BIOS.. coool?

As long as temps are within reasonable limits I am happy with it. When Intel states that threshold is around 70C and after playing Crysis and Call of Duty 4 my temps were at around 50 deg I am happy.
If I every breach threshold temp CPU will switch off computer and I'll know something is wrong and take a look at it. I will cross that bridge when I get to it

i got mine q6600 stepping g0 overclocked to 3ghz and i even could lower my voltage. so now i got 60 degrees at full load , like before as it runned stock speed with stock voltage

My Computer

Borgfish, do you have an aftermarket Cooler for that thing, or you using the stock Intel cooler??

If your OC'n you should use an aftermarket cooler, I'd suggest the Thermaltake Ultra 120 extreme, or the Tuniq Tower 120mm. they are known to be the best.. and Sure will lower ur temps. those are OK, but a lil high. is that full load of 60 during a game, or 60 while running a stress test...? the CPU is rated at 70C by Intel if you didn't kno..

now after I've properly set my Tuniq Tower Cooler on my Q6700 I get idle temps around 35C, and max load temps of around 54C thats with a 3.33Ghz oc.

Hello, yes i got a maxorb, with a screw on it to modify the rpm's , i got it pretty low because i dont like it loud. 60 degrees is ok for me.

My Computer

thats cool.. a screw to modify the rpm's. how. I have an extra blue Orb2.. i don't need, or is the MAX better

well i dont like the screw. there are other coolers which have theirs outside of the pc, this one is fixed at the cooler and opening the case for adjusting is senseless. i would like a normal mainboard controllable fan more. it wasnt my decision to get the maxorb but i ended up with it, there are better coolers arround, my best choice would be a xigmatek tower cooler X1283 ? or similar name.
