Public File

Hello all.

I just reinstalled my OS. To get a clean start.
And there are some 'things' I would like to do away with.
Starting with this file. But I am uncertain if deleting it
will cause me problems and I should leave it alone.

Can someone please enlighten me as to what the best
course of action would be?

Hi Ted,

I know how you feel about these.

You should not delete any of the Public folders. These are used to share files between the user accounts without getting UAC and are tightly mangled into Vista. Doing so may cause unforeseen problems.

You can safely delete only the contents of the Public folders in the right pane, and the shortcuts to these folders in your user folders.

I use them, but that's because I have three computers on my network along with a network drive and a soon to be media server. The public folders are thus very useful for me. :P

Yeah maybe someday they will work for me too.
But it's not going to be very long before I install

I hope this question isnt to dumb, but can public folders be viewed by others if you have something like shared music folders like limewire, that you could share with other people? I have sharing folders and public folders. But my personal pictures and docs somehow wound up in public files and i don't want anyone else to be able to view. Just the shared music folders. I'm the only user on my computer. Please help if you can. Thanks.

You could use something like this ...

to move the other stuff where others can't see it.

Hey Barefoot Kid,
First thank you so much for such a quick response it is reallllly appreciated.
Second, and here is where I'm embarresed but everything you wrote was greek to me. I have literally spent all day today trying to teach myself about different things with Visa. I can download music, rip cd's ,transfer photos and edit them, I joined limewire and even figured that out. and oddly that is where the problem came in.
Because it is a share based music site I wanted to be fair and let other users share my music files. Now I have public files, shared files, all kinds of files.
Can people see into the public files, or does public mean for other users of my specific computer? If so there are no other users. I'm worried about people who are trying to share music being able to see my 25th Anniversary pictures or whatever else wound up in there. My grandson scanned some financial documents for me and put them under picture files , so they are in public also. If you have an answer that you can breakdown to a childs level that would be great. If not I totally understand. And I swear I'm very smart about other things, but I don't even know the language most of the time.
