Problems with 64Bit.....?

Hello Again Vista64... OK, so I've been building a new system over the last few weeks.. I'm almost done, and probably in the next day or 2 I'm going to be throwing Vista 64 on my new Build.. so before I get into that OS install mess I figured I'd ask the Pro's (Vistax64) what they thought and what all I should be looking for, worried about.. etc...

I've got myself a Q6700 with GO
eVGA 750i FTW Mobo :D
4GB RAM.. Coming, only have 2 for now.. (I heard while doing 64 install only have 1 stick of ram in.. after it's done add the other.. why?? will that make things easier)
Seagate Cuda 7200.11 500GB 32mb Cache
Corsair PSU
Cooler Master 690 case, modded..
The rest you don't really need to kno.

Basically I'm getting ready to install 64 bit on my new build. and I was hoping for some Direction.. some input on what problems I can expect to have.. I've read that a lot of people are doing fine with games and drivers.. so I don't think I'll have a problem there.. I play some CS, some Crysis and a lil COD4.. I wont have any problems with all those right.

So if anyone has any suggestions as to what I should do, things that I should LOOK for during install.. any tips to help with smooth install and smooth using.. please share..

What are the basic and often seen problems that I may have.. Should I have my CPU and Mobo drivers ready for after OS install.. or can i just update them online after install is finished..

Please share ur info with me I'd appreciate it..

Thanks in Advanced everyone.

/Cory

Looking at your spec, you should have no problems.

From my experience the main problem with Vista x64 is noob's blaming there old hardware incompatibilities or their lack of knowledge on the OS.

Edit

Just one thing I would recommend is installing SP1 as soon as you have the OS loaded ;)

my rig consists of hardware of about 2 years old. socket 939 and 4gb ddr-ram. vista ultimate x64 installed without problems. everything worked right after the installation with the default vista drivers. only later i installed nvidia chipset-, video- and audio-drivers. i did not remove any memory-sticks before installing vista.

and ya I'll use both sticks of RAM and i'm sure the install will go fine..

Buy an OEM version of Amazon its a lot cheaper, i saved £200 and it installed without any problem. The only thing the oem lacks is ms support and you can only copy to 1 pc motherboard. I only need it for my gaming rig so its fine for me.

Here is my setup.

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6600 @ 2.40GHz (2 CPUs), ~2.4GHz

Just do what i did, d/l or borrow the 64 bit version then use it for 30 days until the tryout period expires b4 u buy. It helped me iron out any bugs & i didnt have to worry about not being able to send the oem version back to the retailer (which you cant do). Also, i decided to buy the retail version from ebay, since i only wanted the 64 version of ultimate, i got it for around £90, considering the oem version is around £110 & the standard retail is £300 i saved a small fortune.

Also, save sp1 to your usb pen so the first time you log on to your newly created vista user account you can install it.

I think your Vista 64 program will be OK on your rig, (mine Asus P5K Premium WiFi-AP, Q6600 O/C 3GHz, 8GB Reaper RAM, Samsung SATA 500GB, Ati X1950 Pro). The main problem with Vista 64-bit is not the O/S itself but the other software.

Vista Compatable is just that, 32-bit 90% OK, Vista 64-bit more like 50%! Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 says on the box 'System Requirements Microsoft Windows Vista'. But it did not work general opinion is vista compatable is 32-bit compatability. As a friend who knows a lot and worked for some of the 1970's builders and program writers says:-

" Do you remember before Vista was released all the computer manufacturers were selling new systems with labels on saying they were Vista ready and when Vista arrived they could not run the program properly with not enough memory and poor graphics. The courts decided that Vista ready meant that they could be made to run Vista, but then so could just about every other computer. There was a similar ruling on Vista compatible, you might have to run the thing as a 286 but it would run.

It would take twenty years at least to write a new operating system, what they do is modify what has gone before, if they deviate and make it incompatible they get flak. If they make a change that some customers have asked for they get others saying it is not what they want.

Vista compatible is a trade mark phrase that only applies to Vista 32 and in fact it only means, and the courts agreed, that the program will not crash, many of the computers and programs will not actually run properly but it seems the phrase does not mean that. Most low level utility’s that are designed for 32 will screw up a 64 bit system big time.

That makes you think? It mirrors what I have found. I used the Beta 2, RC1 and RC2 in 64-bit and its as bad now for finding drivers as it was then. In fact Linsky its worse as they no longer have Vista 64 support for thier Wireless Modems! You have to look at it logicaly if you were a software producer would you want users to carry on using the XP software they bought from you 6 years ago; or make some new software that works with Vista 64-bit so they will buy some new stuff and you make more money?

The general feeling in UK is if they could get away with selling software that stops working every 2 years and you had to buy it again they would. I been looking for a 64 bit photo editing programme for the last 6 months and still looking!

Generally, 64bit should have no issues. Just make sure you find the appropriate drivers and (depending on the nature of your use with the computer i.e. gaming, office work, graphic designing etc) make sure you do some preliminary research if certain software works alright or not.

I'd recommend to just install the O/S and find out. My testing has been really good. Aside from using custom drivers (with no digital signing) for some peripherals, it runs just fine. Games are fine (in fact, perform a little better to its 32bit counterpart), random software is fine as well....driver support is also top-notch (unless you have REALLY old hardware or equipment from really dodgy companies) you'll have a good experience.

You can also integrate SP1 prior to installing (either with vLite or get an official Vista SP1 version). Either way, your key is valid for either.

Cool, thank you guys very much for the info.. I don't do all that much stuff thats really hard anyways.. I do use a Wireless Netgear router.. don't want to much longer.. sucks for gaming. I want to hardwire it..

I game, I download, I burn DVD's with nero and DVD shrink.. I do some other Video editing and Encrypting.. nothing to extremely difficult.. I'm thinking I wont have an Major problems.. most my things I do are average for upper computer users and gamers.. so I'll be fine i think.. now I learned about this Windows Alternate Media thing.. I can use old Serial to upgrade to 64.. so I have to wait for disk in mail.. it's ok tho. I'll use a trial in the meantime.. Awesome. thank you all for your help!

Cheers!

I can't remember what version of DVD Shrink I used but I am 99% sure it was older than 3.1 as for DVD Decrypter it would have been of the same the same time say late December or early January 2008.

Sorry I can't be more accurate.

If you want a Full List of what I have that works now email me at:- [email protected]

well I'm pretty sure the models of DVD shrink and Decrypter I use now are the same versions they've had out for the last... at least 6 months.. so dvd decrypter didn't work either then?

Can anyone Confirm these??

Hey, great list dude. Thanks. I use(d) some of those programs on my old rig with xp, but hadn't downloaded them yet on this one because I wasn't sure it was stable yet. LOL Now I know not to. I especially was debating about transfering Office 2003 or buying 2007. Think I'll just buy the basic 2007 with word based on what you just wrote. It really isn't worth 50 bucks for hours of headaches....... reminds me, i need to get on my old computer to get a few files.............

SO Gunt, what COD4 server do you want to be pwned in?

I have used the programs listed and they work fine under Vista 32bit or 64bit, they usually work...

Your Welcome,
To save you some problems This is what will not work for me in Vista 64 even in XP compatability mode; but will work in Vista 32.

PSP 9, PSP Photo X 2, Cerous ThumbsPlus 7, SoundM ADI1988 Audio, Realtek RTLO8110SC LAN Driver, Duplicate File Remover, Netcom3, Recover Files Vista Manager. TechSat DVB Card, Core Temperture, Spybot Search & Distroy, WinCleaner OneClick, DVD Shrink (have not tried the lastest version), Max Registry Cleaner, TweekVista, Ashampoo Win Optimizer, Spyware Doctor, Zone Alarm Firewall (good free replacement is VistaFirewallControl), TweekNow Registry Cleaner. I found that Microsoft Office 2003 did not run correctly and would not update. I could carry on, but this gives you an idea.

We will have to disagree on this. I am using Vista Home Premium 64. Yes I have noticed some difference between the beta's RC's which I used in he 64-bit version before Vista was let loose in the wild, and that was the Ultimate Version and the Home Premium 64 version has a lot less on it.

I went through this 4 times and re-formatted each time on 2 different PC's and got the same results. So what I wrote does apply to my 2 seperate PC's listed below.

MB = Gigabyte GA-K8NS Ultra-939, CRU = AMD 4800+ Dual, RAM = 2GB of Corsair (can't remember the model but its the type with the LEDS that flash on top), Sound Blaster Audigy LS, ATI 9800 AIW, Samsung SATA Spinpoint X2,

Asus P56K Premium WiFi-AP; Intel Q6600 (o/c to 3.1GHz), 8GB of OCZ Reaper PC2-8500 RAM, X-Fi- (SB460), ATI 1950 Pro, Samsung Spinpoint 500GB with 16MB buffer.

And as you say cobber 'It pisses all over the specs required for Vista'! But it did not run crashed and hung up; and they work togeter OK in Vista 32. Strangly enough it worked for a time before it did so every time, in one case when I switched on it had deleted 2 programmes? Other times I needed to boot using the Vista installation disc which removed some of the programmes I wrote about above then it worked. It is still doing so now. A look at the web pages will show I was not alone in this and this is spead over several months. Being an Aussie you have heard of Clive Sinclear well I had his right hand man helping me on this, he was a close friend in Saudi where we both worked.

I am not saying you are wrong mate, but I am saying its ******** in my case.
