The only way to tell is to select and enact each update, update by update, until you find the one that freezes. Fortunately, Windows Update lets you select individual updates to apply.

Start with critical updates first. The first update you should do is the Service Packs: SP1 first, and then SP2. Then, the next updates you should do from the Critical List are updates to "Windows Update" itself. The updates that are left, you should work your way through in the Critical Updates.

When you find the freezing update, write down the "kb" number somewhere and see if there's a fix that applies to it in the Microsoft Knowledge Database, or an issue with that specific "kb"-number update that anyone reports.

When you first boot up, type "Security Center" into the Search Menu's "Start Search" text box." Then open up the second of the drop-down menus on the right, "Automatic Updating." You want to "Change Settings" to "Let Me Choose."

This new setting should change the Windows Update Service to "manual." You can look yourself to see if this is true by going back to the Search Menu's "Start Search" text box," and type in "Services" this time. Open up the app with the gear icon and this is all your available services, listed on the right. Click on any one, it doesn't matter. Just highlight one. Now type in "w" "i" "n" and this takes you immediately to the stock "Windows" services. Update is the last Windows service. It should be "manual." If it's not, right-click on it and select Properties. The start-up type should be right there. Don't disable it! Just make it manual, and "Apply." "OK" if it's already manual.

Now the security center will scream bloody murder but ignore it. You should reboot to save and immediately enact this setting.
