The only way you are absolutly going to resolve what going on is by using a packet sniffer. its a long tedious process, to resolve if gmail is actually getting the packets and refusing them or something else. have you tried thunderbird on another machine in your environment?

You could try opening command prompt and typing

ping pop.gmail.com

And see if you get successful replies.

It kind of like reading a phone book line by line. initially its a bear but gets easier as you do it. the easiest and its free is a sniffer called wireshark. the way it works is you install it and start a capture. then you launch thunderbird. when thunderbird gives you the error you stop the capture and read the capture at some point your username and password will show up in clear text. thats right passwords and usernames are not encrypted.

When you see your user nam and password a couple of lines later will be the response from gmail saying why your user name and passwrod was rejected. there will be three attempts. If you save the file I will give you my email and you can email me the capture it yoou want. JUST REMEMBER your username and password are readable, and other stuff. I might be able to walk you thru it so lets try that first. Is there a reason you are using thunderbird instead of say windows live mail?

Ken

edit: im doing double duty both here and on win 7 so feel free to PM me if you need to.
