Please help

It stopped working at the start of the week, I tried to do a system restore to a point before that and that failed.

The laptop is only 18 months old.

I have been trying to burn CDs on windows media player and I have been trying to burn DVDs on windows dvd maker.

The other night I thought I might have to restore my laptop to the factory settings and I was burning all my excel and word files for work and it burned them.

Ok WMP, and windows DVD maker doesn't work and excel and others do. There is one quick workaround to use different apps to burn the music dvd's The problem is in the apps. some burn some dont. Want to try a different app to burn the music dvd's so you can get working. the best thing would be to back up all your data then do a restore so WMP and windows DVD maker work.

I know I dont like doing things half way eiether. make sure you have the restore disks that came with the computer. Might want to do a back up just before y0ou do just in case (if you have the space)

Yea I am just away to create restore disks because I tried the ones I done when I first got the laptop the other night and it wasnt working but my brain was scrambled with it all so I just gave up to try again today. Looks as though its going to be a long night.

Let's check it fast 'n easy first. Grab a UBUNTU live cd image and burn it on another computer. Start your laptop from that, and see if you can burn a little with it. I've seen cd/dvd combos go partially bad, and unless I missed it the drive itself hasnt been tested.

Might want to ask if the OP knows what Ubuntu is. she has 2 apps WMP and windows dvd maker that dont work and several others that do.

Do have burner app like NERO installed?

Can you get your hands on USB DVD burner?
