I built my Gaming Rig back in December of 2007 with the help of a friend, spent about 1500 for it (see my PC specs below to see what I got), so far, I have updated my video card twice (once would have been enough really!) and my CPU once. Right now, I am about to update my PSU, which I probably don't need but I want to try something new so might as well.
If I had to do it all over again, I would take a little more time when doing upgrades and/or spend a little more money to get a better upgrade... I'll explain.
My first upgrade was to go from the E6300 CPU to the E7200, not much difference there as far as performance is concern and even though I can OC both of them to really good clocks, I tend to not do so because of temps issues after a few days of heavy gaming use.
I went from two BFG 7800 GTX in SLI to a ECS 8800GT 512MB, again, I didn't see that much as far as frame rates or Maxing out any of the games I was playing. I know went for a GTX260 and the increases are minimum.
Being said that, the negligent increases could be because of other problems I have with my PC but, since I am not a PC Guru, I don't know what could be causing the problem with the big increases.
One thing I know is for sure, I will not spend money on hardware to use in the distant future because, in 3 months time, newer components will come out and what I bought will decrease in price tremendously. I have learn that it is better to purchase right when you are ready and just wait for the right moment to buy. I use 2 sites to check for good deals on a daily basis just to window shop... this is how I got a good deal on the new PSU
Sorry for the rant, guess my kids are not lying when they tell me that I tend to rant on like there is no tomorrow
