PC Temp

How does one find out what the pc temp is? Is there some place in windows that will tell you. Will I have to download, purchase something. I would rather have a freebie.

You can sometimes check the temp of your system in the BIOS.. restart your PC and enter BIOS.. (Usuallu hitting delete) and from there you might have a PC Health area that will show it.. or.. or you can just download a simple and free program.. Speedfan works for temps. or what I use, because I worry about my Processor temps.. I used CoreTemp.. great little program. both of those are free also.

GoodLuck fisher dude!

Whats is a good temp the computer should be running at? Like for a dual or quad core. Or what are the normal ranges.

Depends - which dual core / quad core?

Different CPUs have different temps that they run on, and it also depends upon your BIOS settings, what type of heatsink and cooler you have, etc.

That sounds good - I have my Intel Core2Quad 6600 OC'd ~40% and it runs just under those temps because of my Tuniq Tower 120 LFB cooler - arguably one of the three best air coolers, if not *the* best.

ya 40C is decent for a stock cooler actually. what speed is that Agena at? what model is it. do you have a BE.

I also have the tuniq, and the only cooler thats better is the TRUE, or Thermaltake 120mm Ultimate Extreme. They are the best. but they are always crooked so you have to sand them down. I'd get a Tuniq Tower, or a Noctua if you wanted a new cooler, but if your not Overclocking that Quad, you should be good.

I have a Q6700 Quad Core 2.67 GHz OC'd to 3.5 and i stay under 39C on all 4 cores at idle. and under 30 at stock speeds. I also have Artic Silver 5 thermal Paste under my hsf. if you dont' wanna change the cooler. you can always add better thermal paste and that will help with temps a little bit. as long as your load temps stay under 65 or so, your good. Well the max temp might be different on AMD, but on intel's generally it's 70C.

let us know if you have any questions

i have it at 2.3 right now. I have not overclocked it. I changed the thermal paste and it did do a big difference. I used the Ceramic by arctic. It is at about 31c and when running a big program it goes to about 37c. It is the black edition. I am about to buy a different heatsink and fan for it. Thanks for the help!!

oh ok. so how big of a drop did that Ceramic make.. whats the before and afters. I've been hearing the Ceramic is better than the Silver, but yet to see actual results to prove it. And there is now a company called Diamond Paste or something. thats the BEST but it's dangerous it's so conductive, don't spill it anywhere..

Nice, the Black Edition was a great Buy, you can OC that to at least 3.0 GHz or more. Get the Thermaltake Ultimate Extreme cooler, or the Tuniq Tower. they are the best. but if your not needing an Extreme Overclock. soemthing cheaper like a MaxOrb, or a Zalman 9700 would work. or even a cheap artic Freezer Pro.

Let us know how it goes.

I can't give pro results but before I put ceramic it hovered at 37-40C on stand by and with the paste its hovers at 30-31C on stand by. When running a big program it went to about 48C after tha paste it goes to about 40C max. I think its pretty good. I like those temps with at standard heatsink and fan. I would say it dropped 10 degrees just by putting the paste on Roughly.

More than def i am gonna buy one you just suggested i will let you know.

Man, this CoolerMaster V8 is either better than I thought, or the Q9450 is just a lot cooler than the Q6700. I got selected to beta test the thing, and was sent one for free.

I've just upped my Q9450 to 3.4GHz and at idle temps are at 30-31C, one core is steady at 25C. Running 100% I hit about 43. That's with the crap stock grease that came with the thing, I've got some arctic silver on the way.

A little better than the Zalman 9700 I had. Actually the Zalman would cool better if I cranked it, but then it sounds like a wind tunnel. This thing is at max and is about what the Zalman was at 1/2 speed soundwise. But unlike the Zalman, when the machine goes idle the temps drop 10 degrees near instantly. With the Zalman they'd take a second or two to drop.

Hence, it runs cooler.

Of course it runs cooler, but given everything else (i.e. mobo, cooler, case, etc...) just how much cooler should it run?

Problem is though the 45nm chips are notorious about temperature readings not being correct to begin with.

The Q9450 runs cooler than the Q6700.

Intel® Core™2 Quad Processor Q6700 - SLACQ

Intel® Core™2 Quad Processor Q9450 - SLAWR

Note the Thermal Design Power and Thermal Specification. Identical. Yet the Q9450 runs at a faster FSB, faster clock, and has a larger cache. IOW, it can do more in less time and spend less energy doing it.

Hence, it runs cooler.

This has nothing to do with this post so forgive me but, I like your avatar. Have you seen quake live yet?

Where are you getting this from?

Just google "Q9450 temperature" and you'll be deluged with people complaining about inaccurate temperature readings and stuck sensors.

Also, until a few scant days ago Intel had never released max TJunction values for any of their 45nm processors, and without knowing that value you can't calculate accurate temps. Here's an anand tech article on it.

Intel only just released max TJunction values last thursday at IDF, which for my processor looks like it is 100C. I have to go back and calibrate Real Temp now and see what I get.

and how did youg et a cooler for free. Can I try one.

I was lucky enough to be visiting the Cooler Master website the very last day they were taking signups to test it and filled out the form. Much to my surprise one showed up on my doorstep. :)

That was a very good article, thanks for the link! :D However, the article doesn't say this is a problem specific to 45nm cpu's; rather, all cpu's since Intel began using DTS. Further, we don't know which boards guess right and which boards guess wrong.

Googling any cpu's temperature would pretty much guarantee pages of hits reporting high temps. While I appreciate the suggestion, I sort of already knew properly cooling quad cores was a challenge.

This is definitely a subject to keep an eye on though, again... good linkage. :)
