Oh, the humanity: Windows 7's draconian DRM?

The popular technology website Slashdot plumbed new depths on Tuesday with a post about the terrible DRM situation in Windows 7. Proving that some sites will publish just about anything as long as it's anti-Microsoft, the post enumerated the DRM restrictions that Windows 7 apparently inflicts on the honest and upstanding computer user.

What was claimed? Well, some guy decided that he wanted to crack his (legally purchased, no doubt) copy of Photoshop on his Windows 7 install. Windows 7 then sprung into life to break his crack, defend Photoshop's virtue against his unwelcome advances, protect a load of random DLLs from deletion, and open up the firewall so that Adobe could see that he was up to no good. Yup yup. To add insult to injury, Windows 7 then crippled the dude's sound card. Or something.

WOW. If you had bother to get past the first paragraph you would have realised that the person probably used a bad crack.

As is so often the case with this kind of story, the truth is more prosaic. The most likely reason that Photoshop broke is that either the crack didn't work or was the wrong version. Windows doesn't actually know what Photoshop is—it's just another application, no different from any other—and the operating system certainly doesn't contain special programming to detect and destroy Photoshop cracks.

Why lock it...?

It does have relevant views, and nothing personal.....

As for DRM.
I thought Microsoft blamed the music industry for it..?

As for info being sent back to notify of bad conduct in apps,.....

Microsoft put the code in there OS to start with...
It's been there for a long time, Hackers found it and explored it's possibilities, now we have spyware, malware etc

As for IE.......... have anyone tried to remove it from Vista?
Also for IE, !!! has Microsoft actually paid damages yet?
or is it still held up in the High Court?

My Computer

I believe that is still in court (the 15th year or something like that...)

I believe that they were also being sued for putting a monopoly on browsers. Because it automatically installed IE during installation, and not giving an option for FF/Opera/Safari.

~Lordbob

What ever happened about the monopoly problem?

Not so much it automatically installed IE but was free with the OS.
And to use any other browser was a pain when any OS updates were used, until a Netscape patch arrived.
It effectively said, Why purchase a browser when your provided one free.
That's the monopoly.
I thought IE had to be able to be uninstalled, or installed separately?
Be able to be uninstalled, was the change in XP.
Something relevant to "Freedom of Choice"
It was too late for Netscape:sa:
This was before Firefox.
Netscape's choice was sell it's browser source code to Microsoft or go opensource.

Opensource version is called Firefox........... and a few others.

Didn't everyone complain about DRM in Vista??
Personally I have NEVER had any problem with any thing like that since upgrading from XP and I have LOTS of things on my PC...software, videos & music from lots of different sources and they all work perfectly well and exactly the same as they did on XP....am I missing the point here? :sarc:

We don't support or condone illegal activities here. You may want to remove that lest you be banned.

The point here is that should M$ have the right to censor the applications (third party apps) on it?

Sorry post now edited ;) I a a newbie so please forgive me :D

I guess its MS OS so they can do what they want with it, nobody forces us to use it. However if they were to censor the applications my guess is they would soon see a drop in their user numbers...and I guess that is something they don't want.
In a way MS have to try to keep everyone happy....it must be hard for them to please both software & media producers to show they are trying to combat piracy but also they don't want to alienate the users of their OS by enforcing this sort of thing upon us. The way in which the internet is being used is slowly changing and there are many businesses out there all wanting to make a quick buck from it...one way to ensure they do is to have these tight restricting rules/laws and DRM and unfortunately it means we sometimes cant do the things we used to like doing.
That's my look on it anyway...I am no expert just an ordinary guy so I may have it all wrong lol :)
