OEM System change of motherboard
Hi
My desktop system came with an OEM version of Vista Home Premium installed. This has since been upgraded to Ultimate.
Unfortunately the mother board has developed a fault and I will have to replace it.
The original motherboard is no longer available (manufacturer gone bust I think) so I have to replace it with a different make.
According to searches on Microsoft, to continue using an OEM version of vista any change of mother board must be of the same make and type as installed on the original system the OS version was licensed to.
If this is true I will have to purchase a full version of Vista or try and get another OEM version with a motherboard. (VERY expensive  so not an option)
Has anyone had the same problem and know if this is true or know of a way round this.
Regards
Copperfield
Hello Copperfield,
Sometimes if you use the same brand of motherboards you will still be able to use the same OEM Vista on it, but you will have to check with the OEM manufacturer to be sure though.
You could get a cheaper upgrade version and use this method below to install if you end up having to buy a retail copy.

Hope this helps,

Hi EmulatorX,
On a retail OEM copy of Vista that did not come with the computer, it can only be reinstalled on the same computer that it was originally first installed on.
I suppose that you could try to
phone activate with MS or the OEM to see if they may activate it for you though under that type of circumstance.
