Nvidia getting ready to quit chipset business

Nvidia is getting ready to quit the chipset business. What this means, is that SLI and SLI motherboards will become a thing of the past, and will for lack of better terminology be collectors items.

Nvidia to quit chipset business

It doesn't help matters all the problems, that they have with their 680i chipsets, 780i chipsets and so on, and now all the problems with their 8500 and 8600 graphics chips, and recall that is in brewing stages.

We had the discussion of SLI on Planetamd64.com. With the new dual cards coming out, is it needed?

With dual videochip cards like the 9800GX2, and it's competition the 3870X2 and now the 4870X2 just hitting the market, I have to wonder, are SLI motherboards truly needed on the market. Two of the manufacturers, that pulled their 780i and 790i SLI motherboards from market at Gigabyte and Foxconn, and with Gigabyte being a major motherboard manufacturer, this makes me wonder about Nvidia's chipsets and chipset business big time, contrary to what Nvidia might claim.

The 9800GX2, I'm sure can operate on an Intel chipsetmotherboard, without the need of an SLI chip on the motherboard itself, all it would probably need is a driver or bios update to allow it to do SLI on an Intel chipset motherboard or a bios update on the motherboard itself to allow for SLI.

Well, SLI came out once, and then disappeared....

No reason it cannot do the same again.

SLI is a great way to buy a kick ass graphics card now, and then 2 years later buy the same card at a much cheaper price and SLI them and get the same, if not better, performance, from a single new card. I could easily grab a second 8800 GTS and SLI them and have gobs of power - but that GT 260 is calling my name....

A lot of 8 series cards are starting to disappear now. My XFX 8800GTS 512 was just £150 when I got it 3 months ago. XFX seemed to have stopped production on this and to get a second one would cost me about £100 more, unless I buy from a different vendor, like ASUS's 8800GTS 512 is only £150 still.
