Norton Ghost and X64 troubles

When you finaly grow up(and its long overdue. Probably why you live with nothing but cats). You'll thank me as well.

Sonny, I reckon I could give you plenty of years, and plenty of intelligence, you're as thick as two short planks, if you think you can faze me,

Can the sales rep answer a simple question.

Whose that then.?

Why, when you buy a pre-built system from a shop does it inevitably come with either Norton or McAfee pre-installed?

Thats easy, they know which is the best.

Is it because that is the only way for them to sell their products? The other vendors, viz Kaspersky, Avast, Sophos etc don't see the need to market their product(s) in this way. Their reputation is sufficient.

Their "reputation" is keeping off the list of leading systems.

Before you criticise me,

Why should I, you merely asked a question, which I answered truthfully.

I have to admit that I did use NIS2007 last year, but that is the last time I will be using Norton/Symantec products. I had problems installing it - even on a clean install of Vista, it would sometimes register in the Security Center and sometimes it would not. This is despite doing the installation in EXACTLY the same way each time. Another thing - it would not always update properly, sometimes there would be a few days between updates. Even when it did update, it would sometimes fail to install them properly. This year, I am using Kaspersky, and I haven't had a single problem with it.
Dwarf

You obviosly have a conflict on your system, thats why a lot of people are against some products for no other reason that they don't look for a system fault instead, of blaming the product.

If you think about it, if a product works on many systems yet fails on others, what is the logical reason, its not the product, because its been proved it works, ergo its a failure in some part of the system that conflicts with it,

Its just the same with the OS's, people who can't get Vista to work properly, yet there are thousands if not millions who are using it successfully, logic tells you theres a failure in the systems setup.

My Computer

Its official, logic doesn't work here.

Just had to remove "another" install of NIS2k7. Once again all problems solved. A government sysem at that.

Live and learn silver.

That makes 2 systems today in which Norton 2008 products had to be removed to restore system functionality. The last one had better then 200 days left on its subscription. Did not check the first, military bases dont like it when you seem to be snooping through their stuff. I could tell what was wrong anyway just by looking at it.

Your fantasies don't impress, anyone who has to make things up to try to prove a point, is a little sad, you still don't get it do you, your grasp on logic is tenuous to say the least, If it works for the majority its a successful application, if it causes a problem its not the application its the system, good god man, are you so dumb, a child could understand that. its not rocket science.

Good thing for "you" its not, but it still seems you dont get it. You confuuse fantasy for reality.

Hi tomkat,

Sorry that this thread seems to have got out of hand. I used to use Ghost on XP systems without problems, but on Vista the version I had last year (not as recent as yours, but still allegedly 'Vista compatible') just wouldn't work. It would take ages to load and then wouldn't recognise my RAID array despite having the drivers for it - I admit that Vista doesn't recognise the array from the install disk but, unlike Ghost, it DOES allow you to supply a driver. I have come to the conclusion that, since Vista is a much less complicated install than XP and earlier incarnations of Windows, the best way is to clean install the OS and the applications and restore the data from backups. I usually do this on an annual basis when I update my security software to the latest version (I prefer not to pay for an online subscription, but to buy the product off the shelf). However, you did mention that you have 8GB of RAM. Whereas Vista 64-bit has no problems running with that amount of RAM, installation is another matter entirely. Search these Forums and elsewhere on the Web and you will find that people recommend that you remove all but 2GB of RAM and then replace it once installation has completed. Possibly remove 1 of the graphics cards as well.
