Hi:

Yes, I installed and uninstalled the original driver several times. I even used Revo Uninstaller to clean Registry fragments of Realtek drivers and SigmaTel drivers with a reboot before trying a fresh install. The feedback through the speakers when inserting the connector in the jack and the SigmaTel Control Panel display which shows the connected speaker in the jack has me scratching my head that the "device" is intact. I am not sure what the "audio device" is that is referred to in the error message.

Does Vista offer any scan of the system such as sfc /scannow (as in XP) in order to verify the integrity of original files?

Any other work-arounds such as a sound card or any USB device that can act as a switch for external audio?

Can the headphones jack be used for an external speaker configuration?

What do you think of a PCI sound card? The MOB has available slots. Probably worth a $10.00 investment to try. Any brand you might recommend with a VISTA system.

Hi:

If this ultimately is a $30.00 (U.S.) fix, then for many VISTA users that have faced the "no audio device" issue this may be a viable work-around. I will report the results of the PCI Sound Card installation next week when I can get my hands on my Mom's PC. The alternative of a complete MOB replacement and/or a re-installation of VISTA is not attractive to many!
