new license, same computer

Hi,

I bought Vista Home premium 64 OEM for my new multicore computer last year, but unfortunately I did not know it would run only one CPU. I would like to replace this with an OEM Vista Ultimate 64 on the same system. I don't want windows 7 and can only seem to find vista in OEM versions anyway.

I know OEM versions are tied to one system only once activated. But does this work the other way around as well ? ie will I be able activate a new OEM version on my system if there has already been one installed on it before ? I would not like to buy software I cannot install on my system since I cannot return the box.

Hi barnsc and welcome to Vista Forums

I don't see any reason why this wouldn't work. The license stipulates that an OEM version is tied to the first system that it is installed on and that, other than reinstallation on the same system, it cannot be installed on another system. It does not mention replacing that OEM copy with another OEM version on the same machine.

Like you said there is nothing in the rules, it is more to do with the activation process during installation that I am worried about. Nevertheless I'll give it a try I think, it's just too frustrating having half my system sitting idle :P

You should be OK. After all, you'll be using a different disk (which you'll be clean installing) and a different product key.

Just bought & installed the new version. Everything is working as it should now, and no windows activation alerts or anything. What a relief ! Thanks
