Great, newegg doesnt except returns on processors, only exchanges, and only within thirty days, not to mention I have to pay return shipping costs. Im glad i didnt buy a CPU from the local shop and then only find out i cant get a refund on this one.

Im getting more and more frustrated with newegg all the time. i think ill be taking by business elsewhere from now on. their website is all screwed up as well, the text is so small you cant read anything. I actually had to copy and paste to a word document to be able to read it, just making this return process more of a hassle.

I had previously cleared the CMOS when trying the first chip. would i have to do this again after it POSTed at the PC shop before the P4 will work? I dont understand

You mean to say that they had the board working? Clearing the CMOS is just a precaution in case any of the settings are causing the board not to boot.

Well yes they had the board working, thats i how confirmed the CPU was bad. They put in a different CPU and it posted.

when i tried the P4, it would not post. I suppose now that my original main board was never at fault, and it was the CPU the whole time. I just wasted $85 on a new board

So , in summary, I get a blank screen on my PC. Geek squad tells me my motherboard is bad. I order a new board, swap in my current CPU, it still doesnt work. Now i have to assume the CPU is bad, so I buy a new CPU. Install that, it still doesnt work.

So now I have a new CPU and a new main board and it doesnt work. I wonder if im doing soemthing wrong and explore every avenue. i even considered buying new RAM. So I try the new CPU in my old motherboard, thinking the old motherboard was fine and it was the CPU the whole time. Nothing. Try old CPU in new motherboard, nothing. At this point i start losing my mind,spend days troubleshooting and researching, try everything , nothing works.

I now have to assume my new motherboard is bad, so I buy another one. Try new CPU, nothing.

Finally give in and go to PC shop, they swap out new CPU for one they had laying around, and it works.

Now i already returned a good motherboard that I figured must be bad (still waiting for a refund) and bought a 2nd, overpriced motherboard locally and now have to wait for newegg to process and send me a new CPU. UPS is insane, costs me $10 to ship a CPU, and we all know how heavy they are, and it wont be there for a week. That was the cheapest they offered.

So, the one positive out of this is that i learned a whole lot about computer troubleshooting and parts changing.

I only hope when i recieve second CPU in the mail it will work, or else I think im goign to kill myself....lol.

I always buy from NewEgg, and I love their site. They actually provide REAL specs on products, not what manufacturers list on their box (worthless).
Try holding down control and scrolling, this will zoom in on the webpage, so you can read it.

Also, that sucks about the processors. What are the chances indeed?
Very unlucky. As I said, I have never got any bad products from NewEgg. But it happens.

So I think at this point, we know the problem, and just need to wait for conformation it works.

Just a thought. Did you attach the cooler properly with a right amount of thermal paste?

I had a very similar problem when I first started screwing around with building computers out of my obsolete left overs. I finally noticed I forgot to plug the 2nd PSU cable into the MOBO. The four or eight pin connector depending on your PSU and MOBO. It then ran like a champ. When excess wires and stuff start accumulating in the case something like this can be an easy oversight.

I would suggest:
1) Tearing it all back down.
2) Since this is your first build, if your case has a pull-out MOBO tray, try rebuilding the PC out of the case for more light and less blind spots.
3) Take it slow and in steps (i.e. the bare minimum you can use to have a functional PC). Connect the PSU, MOBO, 1 stick of RAM, 1 HD, and if your MOBO has built in video, use it and wait to install your video card.) Boot it up and see what happens.

If it works continue adding components one at a time. So if it stops working you know where a hang up is. But don't assume that component is bad a rush out to replace it. It could be caused by something stupid elsewhere or finicky component requirements. Refer to the component and MOBO manuals and don't take anything for granted. I had a MOBO that required the RAM sticks to be installed in a particular order.

If it is still a "no go" now you have room to play. Try installing the other stick of ram and try it, or try putting the 1 stick of ram in a different ram slot. Review the MOBO manual and go over installing each component as you check your setup. You get the picture.

It is very easy to be where your at now, especially if you're treading new waters. It took me four straight days of cussing my first raid to figure out I was an idiot in the end.

If you still have trouble, post a list that shows:
RAM - size per stick, qty of sticks, Brand and speed
CPU - Brand and speed. overclocked?
MOBO - Brand and Model
PSU - Brand, Model, wattage
GPU - Brand and model
and so forth

This is unbelievable. I was temped to buy a CPU from the local shop and verify that that particular combination worked before I brought it home again, but since thier price was considerably higher than newegg, decided to wait. when i got home and reviewed neweggs return policy, it was exchange only on the CPU. So i sent it back to the egg and they sent me a new one. It took 12 days for this to happen. Got the new replacement cpu today, installed it, nothing again!

I was convinced i knew the problem, so had the main board installed in the case with everything hooked up on first try. So then i took the board out, set it on a box, with only the minimum installed, PSU and CPU fan, monitor cable, still doesnt work.

The ram im using is the same ram the lady at the local computer shop tried it with, so that shouldnt be a factor.

Is it possible i got 2 bad CPU's?

why do u say you need a HD for it to post? I dont belive this to be correct. Am I wrong?

not likely you got two bad cpu's in a row. How do you know the psu is working?

RAM- corsair value select, 2x1GB sticks, 533 DDR2
CPU- intel pentium dual core E5200
main board - ASUS P5N-MX
PSU - DELTA OEM, just took it from a new, functioning PC, so it should be fine. 300 watt
GPU- using on board until i get it working

when testing pulll one. its one less variable (if you can pull one). plus take off any external hardware thata isnt critical, like usb external drives, blue tooth usb hubs etc

My RAM is on the 'qualified vendors list" in the motherboard manual. Im going to asus website to double check CPU is on compatible list, but im sure it is

Is this homebuilt? did it ever work? when in barebones what does a boot attempt do. do you get post beeps? does the monitor come on?
