Networked computers work but don't show up in network folder

Hank --

Are you saying that when you are in the Vista "Network and Sharing Center" and click on "show full map", you see the correct map? And then when you click on the XP machine you get a message that the name is spelled incorrectly?

I can see the XP machine in the map, and it is in the correct place. If I hover over the computer icon, I can see the XP computer name, IPv4 address and MAC address, however the icon is not clickable. By not clickable, I mean that the cursor doesn't change shape when I am over it, and nothing happens when I click in any fashion. (Right, left, single or double.) The Vista machine itself and the router are both clickable in the map, and the switch and the XP machine are not clickable.

As before, entering \\computername (where computername is the name of my xp computer) in the "start search" box works, and the explorer window that is launched by that command has all my XP shared directories. File sharing works fine in that one explorer window.

Thanks

Dave

I haven't red the entire thread so pardon me if this has been suggested.

I had the exact same problem and the fix for me was that the XP machine was an IBM think pad.... it had extra security software installed other than the ones founf in XP. in my case a software suite called ThinkVantage and within this is a setting to disable File and printer share at each re-boot. Which explained in my case why the network worked sometimes and other times it didn;t.

I hope my soloution helps you too.
