Network (Need Answers)

I had a computer I gave my son and I bought a new one. Idon't know a lot about networking but I researched and believe I learn how to set up a simple home network. All I wanted to be able to do is be able to use my computer and access the other one when I needed. I believe that I have it set up properly however I have had very few reasons to access the old one that my son has. I had a cd on the old one (that he uses) that I was trying to download to mine. I'm still haven't figured out how to do it but, That isn't my main concern right now. I clicked the start orb then network and it shows a 3rd computer on my network, I don't have but 2 computers. Anybody know whats up with that, what I should do about it and how that could have happened in the first place. Is someone else tied in to my home network? Please Help Thank You

How do you connect to the Internet, do you have a router, if so that could be the third one showing.
If you do use a router and you haven't got encryptment set up it could be that someone else is connecting to your network but until you tell us your set up we can't really say for sure.
Tell us exactly how you set up your network and someone should be able to help you

Yes I do have a router and I am hooked up wired (ethernet cable).

Since it doesn't open to anything it might be a ghost connection.

Check in your router and look for DHCP Client List and see what computers are listed.

You're welcome although I don't think I can really help, you say you are wired to the router, how does your son's machine connect, is it set up wirelessly or what.

What firewalls are there on both machines and what anti virus software, what encryptment did you set up on the router ?

I'm no expert but these are the sort of things the experts will need to know so they can help you

A little investigation won't kill anyone, more so when it is your network and he might be in uninvited... investigate away and find out what it is.

Mansrm81 I don't have any idea how to check in my router. The router is netgear brand. I didn't install any software because I didn't need it the (plug and play).

Joan, both computers are using McAffee security suite. Everything is wired. Son's computer (everything).

Your router is usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.100.1. I would go into it and see if you have passwords on it. Does it have wireless? If you are not using it, disable it. Is that computer the name of your son's computer. Is Marqui-PC your sons computer name? You are both in the same workgroup with file sharing, you would see all computers. If you don't have share permissions, you can browse to it.

Dear MM, when I got my computer a year ago, and Vista was totally new to me, I could see several computers and other devices in "Network". I thought that rather odd. I belive it was my neighbours, on the same broadband net, sharing the same hub or something. When I clicked on them, I either got a message, like yours, or a log-on pop-up. I experimented a bit, e.g. disabled NetBios to see if that had any effect, but it had not. Finally, I just assumed this was a Vista thing (did not see anything in XP), put my firewall in stealth mode, and stopped bother. Today when I check, everything is gone from Network, including my own computer. Perhaps this happened with SP1.

I am not saying you should not bother and just assume this is OK, you should indeed try to understand what's going on. If you have not got SP1, you could try to install that though.

Edit: Just noticed my firewall re-installation had turned network discovery off. This should be the reason the neighbours disappeared.

Hello Marshall,

can you go into network and sharing centre and then show full map, and post a screen shot of that screen, (when the ghost is present), also could you open an admin command prompt ( start orb, type cmd into the search bar and pres CTRL-SHift-Enter) in the box that appears type "ipconfig /all" (without Quotes & space between g & /) and press enter copty the text produced and paste that into a post

This info should allow us to see what is going on :D
