Network Card Drivers Missing

Hi there, I've just joined this site after hunting on Google for a solution to my problem.

I recently bought a new pc and installed Vista Home Premium 64bit on it. Everything was working fine until I attempted to transfer my files from my old XP based comp using an easy transfer cable. The transfer failed several times and since then my new computer seems to have developed several problems. The only one I'm really bothered about is my lack of internet access. I rang my cable ISP (Virgin Media) after rebooting my modem failed to get the connection back. They ran me through some diagnosis steps before telling me my NIC drivers are missing!

I have searched the net for my drivers, including the mobo manufacturer's site but cannot find them. I don't know what to do now, can anyone help?

We need to see what Windows Vista thinks you have for a network card. To do this please click on the following:

Click start icon > right click on My Computer and select Manage > Select Device Manager and look under network adapters and what does it say there?

P.S. I too looked on Asus and nope no network drivers. Strange!

In my device manager under network adapters it has:
NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller

I'm pretty sure there was something else there before but can't remember what. the woman I spoke to at my ISP also said there should be something else there.

Hi there, sorry it took so long to get back to you but I've had unexpected house guests so no time to tinker with the pc!

I wasn't sure which drop down boxes to select after selecting "nForce" as the first option, none of them seemed to apply to my hardware- I'm hoping you can correct me on that. I did try downloading and installing ForceWare Release 169 for my graphics card but Vista didn't want to know about it...I just kept getting error messages during install.

Here are the options I selected on the NVIDIA Driver site...
Product Type: GeForce
Product Series: GeForce 8 Series
Product: GeForce 8600 GT
Operating System: Windows Vista 64-bit

I'm really tearing my hair out now!

You've selected the driver for th graphics card if I am not mistaken.

Speak to the people who built your PC. They should have installed current drivers for your nrtwork card

Ah right, thanks very much. I'm waiting for a reply from the ebay shop I bought it from. I don't expect a reply till after the festive period now but fingers crossed they can help.

Hi wap wap,
If you click that Nvidia Driver link again look at option 2 on that website. This will tell the Nvidia website to scan you PC and find the correct Nvidia card you have then offer a driver for it. Let us know! Thanks

Thanks Raj, unfortunately as I have absolutely no internet access on my new computer I can't do that. My old pc which I'm using to access the net is a totally different spec. I'm still waiting for the ebay shop I bought the pc from to get back to me. I'm hoping they have the drivers and can send me them by disk or something.

I did a double check and I think I found them. Try this:
Go to ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support-
Look at the General Download section on the left of the page.
Then for Product choose Motherboards
Then for Series choose Socket AM2/AM2+
Then for Models choose M2N_SLI then click Search.
Now click the green/blueish Tab called Drivers
Scroll down a little bit then you will see "NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller Driver for RIS" I would try this. ALso might want to try the Chipset listed at the top of that list on that page. Let us know! Thanks

Hi again Raj. I downloaded the controller driver for RIS but I couldn't understand the first thing about what to do with it when I read the support page at Microsoft. I tried installing the chipset drivers but they didn't make any difference so I'm now going to pay a repairman to come and fix it. I hate to give up on these things but the RIS thing looks way too complicated for me to try myself. Thank you for all your help, I'll post back here once I've called someone out to fix it and let you know what they say/do.

One last question, would doing a HD format and clean install of Vista fix the problem or would that be completely useless?

There was no readme.txt, only a pdf which very "helpfully" pointed to the M$ site for instructions. All is ok now though, I paid a man to come and fix it. At the end of the day all he did was click to re-enable the drivers for the network card which were mysteriously disabled. I swear that's one of the first things I checked when first had problems! After all that it just took a simple little thing.

I feel I wasted your time but I know for a fact the NIC drivers WERE enabled because it said they were working correctly even though I had no net access. Oh well, at least I have net access on my nice new pc now. Thank you so much for all your help and all the best for the new year.

Where in the world did he go to click "reenable" at? He prolly went to control panel > network connections > right click on enable LAN Connection and that did it. Shoot me already :)
