OK I am new to this forum and hope that you can help me.
I have HP laptop of a friends that will not boot. Try safe mode get the blue screen of death. try the start up tools says file smss.exe is missing. I can get to the dos screen using the repair option on the boot option screen. Problem here is 1. it's the X: and not hte C drive. I can see teh smss.exe & tried to copy it into the C drive but says it's nto a valid command. I have seen where thsi could be a Virus giving false mnessages. but unsure. I cant tell you what OS (other then Vista ) it is b\c I can't log in? I am kind of new to working on PC's so any help ..... and please bear with me.

Thanks for responding . No the startup repair doesn't work. it states the smss.exe file is missing. I was able to (using DOS) have been able to verify that hte smss.exe file is NOT missing... but I went ahead and copied the file from the X directory to make sure the smss.exe was there. So I am now able to get into the C: drive now? any suggestions? again thansk for responding
