regedit is already installed, to get to it go to your start menu, and select run... then type regedit into the dialog box.

Make sure to follow the instructions to the letter, if you poke around in regedit you can screw up the machine.

This same thing happened to me on my new HP. I noticed the plug in the back of the CD/DVD drive was not all the way in. You may want to check that just to make sure.

okay you're on the right track.

On the left hand side, you've already drilled into HKLM, just follow the path I posted in that link to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11*CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

In other words, click the little arrow on the side to open system, then CurrentControlSet, then Control, then Class, then click on {4D36E965-E325-11*CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Once you get to that registry key and select it, then in the right pane you see the entries. In that right pane you should see (Default) under name and under data "DVD" or "CD" drive, so you'll know you're in the right directory.

You will see entries that begin with "UpperFilters=" and "LowerFilters=". You may or may not see both, it all depends on your system and the drives so don't worry if you only see one.

Right click on those entries in the right pane, and delete both of them. Then exit regedit and restart the machine. This hopefully is the cause of the problem, I think it should be as this is a fairly common vista bug. Actually it's a fairly common XP bug that wound it's way into Vista and the fix is the same in XP too.

Here's a link to a screengrab in regedit of where you need to be. This particular entry only has the "lowerfilters=" but remember if you see both upper and lower filters to delete both:

Let us know how it goes!

Interesting. The last JPEG you posted (17171717) yes, that's the HD.

The 15151515 jpeg is right where you wanted to be.

The only other thing I can tell you to try is to uninstall the CD drive in the device manager. Open up the run command again and type devmgmt.msc.

The device manager will pop open and you should be able to see the cd drive under DVD/CD ROM drives. Right click it, and uninstall. Then restart the computer, and it should find the CD drive again and attempt to reinstall it.

However I must say I think your problem is a faulty drive. Unless the IDE cable has worked its way loose inside the machine, which is also a possibility. If you feel secure in opening the machine and checking the cables to the drive you can make sure. Doing so however would probably void any warranty you have.

Is it still under warranty from Dell?

or maybe this:

but i think this the hard disk ... not cd room..

Don't touch UpperFilter,LowerFilter in other subkeys!Not for all devices (which are represeted in subkeys HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class ) these phrases are wrong - in your way what you showed it is correct value and don't touch it.

Althoug there are programs which modyfied valuesUpperFilter,LowerFilter in these subkeys and when you uninstall them you may have unpleasure surprise for example:

mouse don't work (I had it one month ago),keyboard don't work or you can't run your system.But it is diffrent thread very wide and don't concern yours!
