MSI R4890 Cyclone OC question

i am using CCC and MSI afterburner. Currently i have it running at 900 Core MHZ and the memory at 1110 MHZ x4

im thinking i cant get the core any higher because of the voltages how do i unlock the card to tweak the voltages?

what do u mean? this card is a beast its made for overclocking i just need to give the card more voltages for the core, it bottle necks past 910

oh well i need to figure out how to mess with the voltages cause this card bottle necks if i try to go past 910 it shuts down and turns back on and shortly after windows 7 restores it

your gonna need to do a (volt/BIOS mod) to go above this, ive never done one or even researched it really, but many do it on the 4890s with great results....

just hunt down some ''4890 volt mod'' info off the web, then take it from there.... by the looks of it you've done well already without the mod, i cant see the clocks going much higher than they are right now even with more volts....

(though im no ATI expert )

im looking into this atm and it seems pretty dangerous atm im using ATI RBE but im kinda confused on how to use it i just wana tweak this thing to where its stable at 1ghz core clock and 1110mhz memory clock

The difference between most factory overclock cards and the lower end models are the voltages applied in the BIOS.

The reason some cards are sold as higher clocked versions is because they are 'better binned' or in other words, have better quality chips which can handle the higher voltages. Those cards that can't handle the higher volts are sold at lower speeds. That is why there is no guarantee that you can achieve the same stable clocks as the OC'ed models.


Anyway...


Before committing any settings in the BIOS permanently using RBE or rivatuner, I'd suggest using GPUtool to test various clocks and voltages first to find what the card can do:

The max 'safe' voltage for the core (VDDC) is between 1.4 / 1.45 - however this is entirely dependent on how effective the cooling is. Don't jump straight to the max 1.45 - In fact I would use 1.4000 as your max 'safe' voltage to begin with. You don't want to fry/cook your card while attempting this.


GPUtool doesn't permanently apply settings, but you can save profiles. This is important for testing in case you set something that the card can't take. The downside is that you have to manually apply the profile every time you start Windows.

Basically you just set the core/mem clocks under the clock tabs and set the voltage (VDDC) under the voltage tab. I set the fans speed manually with CCC.

Use GPU-Z to monitor the temps:

Another method would be to download and flash the BIOS from the SOC version - but this method has it's risks. A bad flash or if the card can't take the OC settings - can brick a card.


Another method is to use rivatuner. I haven't personally used rivatuner to adjust settings, so I can't vouch for it, but this guide may also help:

It's possible if a cable isn't connected properly. It may be worth double checking both plugs are fully secure.

Otherwise, it may be just a bug where it's incorrectly reading a sensor.

Is that your stock BIOS?

i checked they are both on and i guess i should grab a electric sensor and see what the wattage is on them it could be the power supply. Also yeah thats the stock settings im a total noob with this program if u could help me do my voltage perfictly that would be great.

Sorry mate, I don't AIM or MSN.

For the time being, until you know what volts and clocks are 'okay' I'd suggest you'd leave RBE alone for the time being and use GPUtool instead.

It's simpler, quicker and with less risk of borking your card.
