Missing some system files.

Hi Guys, i was in a process of removing virus on a customer's computer. I ran MBAM and superantispyware to remove lots of trojans and spywares and then i ran a boot scan from avast and it removed lots of infected system files like msconfig, cmd.exe, notepad, taskmgr.exe, etc. Now the scan is complete and there's no virus left on the computer. But now when i type cmd.exe in RUN, i get an error saying that Windows cannot find RUN & so on.
Is there a way to get those missing system files?

Hi Dinesh,

Sounds like you may need to do a Repair install. You need a Vista dvd - same bit version as the client has installed.

If the client has an OEM pre installed version of Vista - some of the proprietary oem apps. may get disturbed - no big loss.

Reactivating may be a slight issue. I assume there is a product key stickered on the client's machine?

You could use that , but might need to ring the OEM to activate.

You could extract the product key and activation code from the HD first, do the Repair install, then reinsert the prod key and act. code. Let me know if you want to find out how to do that.

Are you able to back up any really vital data from the client's machine onto an external HD - before you do anything else?

Really, the best thing after a serious infection is to flatten the drive by doing a clean install, or restoring the factory state from the manufacturer supplied recovery disc or partition.

Back up any of the client's important data first.

If you cannot do that from within Windows onto an external HD,
use a bootable recovery disc to transfer the data.

Most of the Paragon boot discs have a File Transfer Wizard which will do the job.

If you do not have one to hand , the File Transfer Wizard is also on this - d/l free and it burns itself to cd. :

If it was an oem preinstall, what did you do about activating?

I do not know about other OEM computers, but if you have a Dell computer and if you are using the same Vista DVD which came with the computer, you do not need any activation. It bypasses the activation automatically.

Thanks for the update.

If you did the upgrade(repair) install with a Dell dvd that should be fine. The Dell dvd is an installation dvd, with the key already included.

As far as I know, most of the other oem "recovery" discs are images , and do not allow upgrade /repair installs.
