Microsoft Update KB2505189

I received notification through Windows Update to install Vista Update KB2505189. I installed the update today and it trashed my IE9 browser. The browser opens but no web pages will load. It hangs up and says NOT RESPONDING. I uninstalled the update and everything works fine now. Has anyone else experienced this problem with this update and if so what is causing the problem.

What did the patch include? May not even need to update it.
Sometimes I hide the updates until all the dust settles and other members have worked the bugs out.

Hi welcome to the forum.
Re: The above update.
I have just uploaded this same update & found no problem on my computer.
However, having read this post first I made Restore Point for safety, just in case.
Up to now I think there has been very little documentation of problems.
This maybe due to the fact that it is so recent, however I came across one:-
Update for Windows Vista (KB2505189) gives problems. « How-To Geek Forums
The following link will explain what the update is for:-
An update for some DirectWrite and XPS issues in Windows Vista SP2 or in Windows Server 2008 SP2 is available

Hope this helps a little.

To chime in, I also received notification of KB2505189 in Windows Update today, along with another. The other installed fine but KB....189 failed, even after a retry. It's been years since I've encountered a failed update. Hmm.... I'm really not sure about the Quality Control at MS any more.

I agree it does look strange when others download ok, and some have problems wit h this specific update.
Time will tell if it is going to be a problem, however hopefully MS won't let it get that far IF it is their problem.
It could be down to the individual computers and their differences, as a thought?
Interesting to keep a watch on this particular one though.

ewyatt if yours failed to download, maybe it did you a favour! LoL!
You could always hide it for now, rather than it always reminding you. Maybe try & re-instell after first seeing if it's going to be ongoing problem.

kire612002 - Was yours IE9 also?

Yeah, maybe coincidence of course, but all seem to be on recently, I presume, downloaded IE?
Although mineOK on IE9.
If you hear of any more, let the forum know.
Will be worth watching.
The 'Wolf Man" - has a point hide it until the problems have been solved!

I just uninstalled this update after it automatically was installed via automatic updates. This update kills IE9 AND Windows Mail. Basically slowing them to a crawl. They do open after about 2 minutes of waiting. Something definitely wrong with this update.

EI9 again,It does seem that way, we have had quite a lot of the same problems with this update.
As mentioned in the other post, hide it & wait & see!
I do not have my updates set to Automatic for this reason.
If manual, you choose, if it goes wrong you know which one.
As I mentioned earlier I downloaded, but did system restore point, just in case.
We will see how many more complain, it only came out today!

Hi....I'm new to this forum....but had the same problems with the update....though in addition, my Windows mail program seems to have changed and now there is no attachment symbol on the far right side of the screen where I use to be able to click on the paper clip and open an attachement.....any ideas?

Hi welcome to the forum.
Mmmm! This update has certainly upset things.
Sorry, a number of questions, did you uninstall the update?
Was your windows mail or live mail? It was ok until update?
Are you on EI9?

Sorry for the delay my ISP just cut internet for 30 minutes, how nice
I only got the update today to download,
.
If you received update today, then going back 3 days should have taken it out?
Check on your windows > View Update History see if it is there, if not you got rid of it.
If it's there system restore did not work.
When did your windows go wrong?

A thought for you Doc!
What may solve a problem, may, is an upgrade!
You've upgraded to EI9, I think it would be time/advantageous to upgrade to windows live.
Unless you are dead set against it for some reason?
Have a look at the link that would help transition:-

Import your e-mail, contacts, and calendar into Windows Live Mail
Let me know what you think!
