If you want real antivirus/antimalware protection on your system, be willing to spend about $30 (initial cost) for a good program.
If you need help chosing a program, here is a good place to start. Just keep in mind the old saying, "you get what you pay for". If its free, don't be surprised if you find yourself infected with malware.
I personally recommend Eset's NOD32 3.0 antivirus. It provides excellent antivirus and antimalware protection, and you can "set it, and forget it" (you can even back up your config settings if you tweak it for maximum protection).
