Ok guys, quick update because you all tried so hard and I'm sorry it took me a few days to get back to you.
I tried all your suggestions and frankly was ready to give up but decided to try one last thing. I went to the closet and pulled out an old set of speakers with external power supply. I didn't have speakers before because didn't want my desk so full of "stuff" and I only ever used the headphones anyway.
So anyway, I hooked up these speakers then plugged my headphones into the jack on the speaker rather than the jack on the pc. Now I have excellent volume in my headphones, which is what I was after. I just wish I could do it without having the speakers set up.
