Looking for a Good EMAIL Client

I have vista and it came with Windows Mail... The application is less than satisfactory.
Please advise what email client you would recommend

I use Thunderbird with lighning to control my Email and Calenders, (and there are many),

Microsoft would I think like you to se Windows Live Mail which is a good deal more feature rich.

Have you tried Windows Live Mail, that will do all your accounts plus RSS Feeds and newsgroups.

All my posts are taking a lot longer at the moment - my better half is downloading a large file and using all the bandwidth

But nice to see we agree, in part at least - have used Thunderbird since the start and it does everything I want it to and I can synchronise my contacts and calenders with my Phone just by plugging in the phone

I don't use my phones to their full extent, I don't need to email or go online through them as I don't work or go anywhere so there's no need, even though I have 3 mobiles as well as the cordless home phone. My contacts are listed on the mobiles though if I ever wanted to do it, I think that must have happened when I installed the software for the phones

I did try Thunderbird a while ago but then just went with what came already with the machines, apart from WLM which I had on my XP so installed it on the Vista one when I got it.

Well, Thunderbird did what I couldn't get WLM to do...import my folders EXACTLY as I had them set up in OE. WLM kept importing all the messages from ALL folders and putting them into ONE folder in WLM. I had specially named sub-folders for certain email messages (such as purchase confirmations, family, etc)...Thunderbird very neatly created the exact folder set up, with all appropriate messages within, that I originally had on Outlook Express. Plus, WLM would not import certain messages that I really needed. Thunderbird had no problem with them. Why can't Microsoft make their software work nicely with each other? Why do I always end up pulling my hair out when dealing with their software? ...sigh!

They do! I haven't had to pull one hair out----- yet!

I'm currently using Windows Live Mail 2009 and there's two things I don't like about it.

1. WLM (and OE used to do the same thing) will arbitrarily put my hotmail email address as the "From:" address even if I set my local ISP email address as the default. So I have to click the arrowhead and select my local ISP email address from the list. WLM 2008 "always" used my hotmail address for the default "From:" address and I thought WLM 2009 fixed the problem but it will abitrarily insert my hotmail address as the "From:" address.

2. WLM insists on scrolling the folders in the left pane all the way down when I drag-and-drop email from the right pane into a storage folder in the left pane. Then I have to scroll the left pane up again to the storage folders to be able to drag-and-drop more email into another storage folder. Very irritating and time consuming. Maybe it's just me and the way I want to manage my email, but that's been my experience on both my Vista and WinXP Pro PCs.

I just downloaded Thunderbird and so far it hasn't inserted my hotmail address as the "From:" address when I compose a new email or respond to an email. Looks good on this.

I haven't set up storage folders in the left pane of TBird yet so don't know if item-2 will happen in TBird. My guess is that it won't scroll the left pane without my permission. But we'll see what happens.
